WILLIAMSPORT MAN FACING DRUG, FIREARMS CHARGES
A man from Williamsport is facing seven felony counts for drug and firearms charges and is free on bail after his preliminary hearing in Williamsport Thursday. According to the Sun Gazette, state police narcotics officers served a warrant against 40 year old Joseph Clay Lyles at his home on Franklin Street in March. According to an affidavit, police found that Lyles was in possession of 1.2 pounds of cocaine, four rifles and a handgun even after he signed a sworn statement that he had turned in his guns following a PFA filed against him. Lyles was incarcerated for the multiple charges including intent to deliver a controlled substance and failure to relinquish firearms. He posted the 125 thousand dollars bail.
GAME WARDEN CHARGES MONTOURSVILLE MAN FOR HUNTING WITHOUT A LICENSE
A Montoursville man who the Game Warden alleges shot and killed two white-tailed deer last December without a license was charged with unlawful taking and upon an investigation at his home by police, additional drug charges were also filed. According to the Sun Gazette, when police arrived at the home of 21 year old Caleb Price on Jordan Avenue following a tip, there was evidence of the butchered deer in his garage along with cocaine, marijuana, and other drugs. Price was charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, two counts of unlawful killing of big game, hunting without a license and more. He posted 5 thousand dollars bail.
CELEBRATION OF WOMEN VETERANS
A ceremony to celebrate women veterans will be hosted by State Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver this June and all women who served in the U.S. Armed Forces from World War II through today are eligible to register to participate before May 9th. According to media outlets, this second annual event is in observance of Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania on June 12th. A virtual display of veterans’ stories will launch online on June 9. HELP CHOOSE MASCOT FOR JV BROWN LIBRARY
Administrators of the James V Brown Library are hoping the public will help name their new mascot for their 2025 summer Learning program. According to the library, from May 1st to June 6th, patrons are invited to visit the Library Help Desk or jvbrown.edu to submit a name idea for the little Tiger in a JVB T-shirt who is a new friend for last year’s mascot, Orange the Library Lion. The winning name will be announced on June 14 as part of the Summer Learning Kickoff activities at the Library.
INMATE FACING NEW DRUG CHARGES AFTER VIDEOS SURFACE
An inmate at Lycoming County Prison who will be sentenced in June for his role in a sex trafficking case is now being charged with drug charges after an investigation of his phone turned up videos of him cooking and weighing out illegal drugs at his home on Park Avenue in the city. According to the Sun Gazette, 40 year old Allen Arthur Frazier was in court Monday for his arraignment and was recommitted to prison in lieu of an additional 75 thousand dollars bail for two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He had been convicted earlier this year for criminal attempt to traffic individuals.
MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULTING POLICE
A man from Loyalsock who police say is struggling with mental health issues was jailed after a confrontation with state troopers last Saturday at around 7:30am at his home. According to the Sun Gazette, police were called after 57 year old Joseph Michael Smith had been walking in the middle of the street near Northway Road Extension in Loyalsock Township. After a conversation with the officer inside his home about being transported for a hospital evaluation, Smith rejected the department policy that he must be handcuffed, and allegedly attacked the officer who then used a taser to subdue him. Smith was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, resisting arrest and harassment, and was jailed in lieu of $75,000 bail.
SKIN CANCER SCREENINGS AT UPMC
A limited number of free skin cancer screenings will take place at UPMC locations through the month of May. According to a press release, patients can schedule times on May 5th at locations in Williamsport with appointments available from 8 to 5pm in Williamsport and 9am til 3pm in Lewisburg. Other locations participating for National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month include, Wellsboro, Coudersport and Port Allegheny. EMPTY THE SHELTER EVENT IN DANVILLE SATURDAY
Adoption fees at several SPCA’s in Pennsylvania will be lower Saturday including the shelter in Danvile for an Empty the Shelters event. According to the BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending pet homelessness, the fees which can normally be up to 300 dollars for adult dogs are being lowered to $25 for adult cats and $40 for adult dogs. The Pennsylvania SPCA’s other locations in Lancaster County and Philadelphia will participate in the event alongside 380+ shelters across 43 states to help pets find loving homes. The fan who fell from the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall in right field at PNC Park during Wednesday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs remains in critical condition. The injured man is Kavan Markwood, a former student and standout athlete from the Southern Allegheny School District who is a 2022 graduate and MVP of the football team during his senior year.
