MIDDLEBURG MAN ACCUSED OF RAPE OF A CHILD
A Middleburg man is accused of rape of a child and is in custody for acts he allegedly committed between May 2016 and June 2019. According to the Daily item, state police at Selinsgrove report from victim testimony that 52 year old Matthew E. Gilbert committed the assaults against the girl when she was between the ages of 5 and 8. Gilbert is facing five felonies including indecent assault and corruption of minors and is jailed in lieu of 250 thousand dollar. His preliminary hearing is May 27th.
SCHOOL BUILDING EVACUATED DUE TO MINOR FIRE
Students at the Hepburn Lycoming Primary school were evacuated Monday because of a fire. According to the Sun Gazette, student and staff at the school on Route 973 were marked safe after officials say a small fire broke out in a second floor ceiling Monday about 11:40am. Fire officials were called and they said there were no flames or smoke visible outside the building but that it was an overheated electrical issue that caused the fire and they brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes. Classes resumed just before 12:30pm.
WHITE DEER WATER TANK TO BE REHABILITATED
A major rehabilitation of the 503 thousand-gallon water tank in White Deer Township is being planned after the Pennsylvania American Water Company recently announced an investment interest in the project. According to media outlets, the company will invest more than $500,000 to sandblast, repaint, and repair the tank as part of an infrastructure plan for the company and one of several upgrades happening across the state. Pennsylvania American Water says it plans to invest $6.2 million this year to improve or build water storage tanks. No service disruptions are expected while the upgrades take place
APPLICATION PERIOD OPEN FOR CONSERVATION GRANTS
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has opened the application process for the 2025 Wild Resource Conservation Program that provides grants for research and conservation projects that protect Pennsylvania’s native wildlife, plants, and ecosystems. According to DCNR, Pennsylvanians can help contribute to the WRCP through the Eastern Hellbender license plate and the state’s voluntary tax check-off. 372 thousand dollars was awarded in Pennsylvania in 2024 which supported research, habitat restoration and conservation. Applications for grant funding will be accepted through July 7th at 4pm through the DCNR grant portal.
SHAMOKIN WOMAN CHARGED WITH ARSON
A woman from Shamokin was charged with arson after police say she set trash and other items on fire in her yard on May 1st. According to the News Item, the fire that 45-year-old Kareen Murray allegedly started at 139 South Third Street caused some outside stairs to ignite. A criminal complaint was filed after a Shamokin detective interviewed Murray who they say admitted to burning what she though was illegal drugs and leaving the property while the items were burning. Murray is facing felonies of arson, reckless burning, risking a catastrophe and flight to avoid apprehension as well as several misdemeanors. Police were able to extinguish the fire with no injuries or major damage reported.
STATE PRISON FOR MAN ACCUSED OF THEFT IN BRADFORD COUNTY
A man who was convicted in Bradford County for stealing diamond rings from an Athens Walmart and failing to appear for sentencing was apprehended in April and will serve up to 7 years in State prison. According to North Central PA dot com, 34 year old Matthew Patrick Gay was charged with multiple felonies including felony retail theft and then failing to appear in court. He was previously found guilty of similar theft charges in Berks County and served less than a year prison time and probation. But the same type of theft charges he acquired in New York State were dismissed.
CRIME WATCH GROUP COMING BACK TO SUNBURY
A Crime Watch Program in Sunbury has the potential of starting up again after officials there say residents have expressed interest in revamping it. According to the Daily Item, a meeting May 28th at 5pm at the Sunbury police station on Arch street is planned to get an idea of who wants to participate. Police Chief Travis Bremigen said interested residents will be trained to learn what they can and cannot do as a Crime Watch group. He also said that he and other council members will begin foot patrols through the summer months, and that they hope to register resident’s surveillance cameras and Ring cameras.
MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY IN MONTOUR COUNTY
The annual parade and a day of events is planned in Danville by the veterans of Montour County on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26th. According to North Central PA dot com, the day begins with a Tribute of Flowers at the river bridge across from Zamboni Park at 10am before the parade heads to Memorial Park for a ceremonial program with American Legion Post 40 Commander and US Navy & Air Force Veteran Terry Whitmore as the Master of Ceremony and music selections provided by the Danville High School Band. In case of rain, the park ceremony will instead be held in the Danville Middle School Auditorium starting at 10 am.
