FATAL ACCIDENT CLOSES ROUTE 54 FOR TEN HOURS
There was a crash yesterday afternoon along Route 54 near Washingtonville that killed a 21 year old Columbia County man. According to state police, the as yet unnamed victim from Orangeville failed to slow down in a construction zone in his Jeep while traveling westbound around 5:30pm and struck a tractor trailer heading eastbound. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 21 year old Lillian J. Gansell from Millville was transported to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with minor injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer 47-year-old Elton Vanholten of Georgia was not injured. Route 54 between Route 254 and Interstate 80 in Derry and Valley townships reopened just after 4am this morning after a 10 hour closure to complete the investigation. Washingtonville and Valley Township Fire Department assisted.
WILLIAMSPORT WOMAN CHARGED WITH RESISTING ARREST
A 27 year old mother of a 4 year old was arrested May 2nd at her home on Federal Avenue after refusing to surrender to Williamsport city police at her home serving a warrant. According to the Sun Gazette, police say when they arrived and approached her front door, Sierra Young-Bey allegedly began yelling loudly from her second floor window and refusing to come to the door. Once officers obtained a key for the residence, the woman continued to resist arrest. The violent behavior continued at the police station as she was charged with several misdemeanors including flight to avoid apprehension resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. She was arraigned and jailed but posted 5 thousand dollars bail.
GAS MAIN UPGRADES IN SUNBURY NEXT WEEK
There will be gas main replacements and upgrades starting next week in Sunbury and some roads will be impacted with some gas service interrupted. According to UGI Utilities, the work will start May 19th and will affect areas around South 2nd Street from the Exit off Veterans Memorial Bridge to South Front Street; and in the Weis Market headquarters parking lot during daylight hours 7am til 5pm Monday through Friday until the end of June. DEMOLITION OF OLD CITY BUILDING SOON
City Council has approved a request for the demolition of the former Moose Club building in the Old City section of Williamsport at 33 E. Third Street. According to the Sun Gazette, city zoning officials say asbestos will be removed from the deteriorating inside before the demolition is done, but no timeline has been announced. There is no plan to rebuild on the empty lot, but City officials say they will seed the lot with grass after the building comes down.
ANIMAL NEGLECT CHARGES FOR LOCK HAVEN WOMAN
A Lock Haven woman who was arrested along with a 15 year old girl for assaulting a 19 year old pregnant woman, and a third party for recording the assault on her phone in April in Hoberman Park, is now charged with animal neglect. According to North Central PA dot com, police searched the apartment of 21 year old Hailey Gillott after the assault and found a neglected mother dog with a litter of ten puppies covered in fleas and surrounded by waste. Gillott was charged May 6th with misdemeanor animal neglect, but is also facing charges of aggravated assault of an unborn child, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and more for the previous attack. GIllott is in Clinton County Prison in lieu of 100 thousand dollars bail, plus an additional 500 dollars bail for the animal neglect charges. Her formal arraignment is May 27th.
WYSOX MAN ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING GIRLFRIEND
A Bradford County man who faced assault charges against his girlfriend last November and was fined, was arrested May 3rd for similar domestic assault charges. According to North Central PA dot com, police were called by the victim to the Wysox area home and encountered 25 year old Daniel Calaman barricading himself in the basement area of the house. Police say they observed obvious cuts and bruises on the woman who said Calaman strangled and beat her. Calaman was held at the Bradford County Prison for four days before he posted 50 thousand dollars bail. His charges include strangulation, simple assault, and harassment.
UNION COUNTY HAS UPDATE ON DATA BREACH
Another update has been published for those in Union County who were affected by the data breach reported earlier this year. According to Union County officials, the March ransomware attack compromised some personal and health information from several county agencies including County Children and Youth Services. The county has announced that they are still reviewing records and plan to offer written notices and credit monitoring. Get information about the breach at unioncountypa.org.
CANNABIS BILL FAILS IN THE PA SENATE
The PA State Senate rejected House Bill 1200, the Cannabis Health & Safety Act, bringing about a roadblock for House Democrats who passed it May 7th by a 102-101 party-line vote. According to WJET, the Senate Law and Justice Committee, which is led by Chairman Republican Dan Laughlin, voted 7 to 3 to reject the proposal saying that they want to see the state medical marijuana program reformed before it will pass in the Senate. In his budget proposal, Governor Josh Shapiro included marijuana legalization, projecting $1.2 billion in revenue. Budget negotiations in Harrisburg continue through June 30th.

NFL 2025 Schedule News
The NFL’s 272-game 2025 regular-season schedule kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Kickoff Game at Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday, Sept. 4.
The 2025 season slate features seven International Series games: Three in London, and one game apiece in Berlin; Dublin, Ireland; Madrid, Spain; and São Paulo, Brazil. The NFL is playing games in Dublin and Madrid for the first time this season.
In addition to its traditional three Thanksgiving Day games, the NFL will have three games on Christmas Day.
