FATAL UTV ACCIDENT IN SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP
A 12-year-old girl was killed in an off-road vehicle accident Saturday evening in Northumberland County. According to the Daily Item, the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on a trail near Reitz Road in Shamokin Township. The Northumberland County coroner said the girl was pronounced dead just before 9 p.m. at a nearby property on Ash Road. Police say the vehicle involved was a utility task vehicle and that the exact cause of death is being withheld until the family receives full details. The investigation is ongoing.
NEW TRIAL FOR CONVICTED SEX TRAFFICKER
A Williamsport man convicted of human trafficking and child sex crimes will get a new trial. According to the Sun Gazette, 41 year old Allen Arthur Frazier, was found guilty in February of offering drugs and money to two teenage girls for sex. But in April, Lycoming County Judge Ryan Tira ruled the verdict was tainted after it was revealed prosecutor Korrin Moon was married to the state’s expert witness, a fact not disclosed during trial. The judge found the omission unintentionally concealed a potential bias. Frazier remains in the Lycoming County Prison.
FUNDS FOR WILLIAMSPORT AIRPORT ROOF
The Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority has approved nearly $19,000 in additional roof repairs for the terminal building. According to the Sun Gazette, airport authority executives also report that all 104 scheduled Southern Airways Express flights in June were completed with no cancellations, though overall air traffic dipped due to weather. The airport will host Girls in Aviation Day on September 24, a global event encouraging girls to explore aviation careers, co-sponsored by Penn College and the Girl Scouts. In addition, the airport also plans to join the Little League World Series Grand Slam Parade on August 12, likely with a float.
STATE POLICE LOOKING FOR MORE SUNNY DAY CAMP CAMPERS
State police are gearing up to expand their annual Troop F Sunny Day Camp for kids with special needs, set for September 24th at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds in Hughesville. According to the state police, last year’s camp hosted 110 cadets, and they’re hoping for more participant this year. The free, law enforcement-themed event includes games, police vehicles, and lunch. The event is open to all ages, and welcomes individuals with disabilities, Special Olympics participants, and their families. Registration closes September 4th at sunnydaycamp.org.
MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE
A Montoursville man is facing attempted homicide charges after state police say he ran over a woman during a violent confrontation outside a Kelly Township restaurant last week. According to the Sun Gazette, police say 21-year-old Caleb Timothy Daniels was told by his girlfriend she wanted to end their relationship during breakfast Thursday. A second woman—her friend—was also there for support. Police say Daniels became aggressive, and later used his car to run over the friend, causing serious injuries. He fled but was arrested soon after. Daniels was charged and jailed on $400,000 bail.
HEALTH NURSE SENTENCED FOR STEALING
An Athens woman has been sentenced after admitting to stealing from her 90-year-old patient. According to North Central PA dot com, 54-year-old Lisa Pate received 18 months of probation and a $250 fine for theft on July 3rd. Police say Pate, a home health nurse, was caught after the victim’s daughter set a trap—leaving marked bills in a purse. When $70 went missing, Pate denied involvement but failed to return to work, later blaming a foot injury. The investigation began in October, and Pate who had no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to the theft charges in May.
CITY TRAFFIC PLANS FOR 2026
Williamsport is investing in traffic safety upgrades for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists in planned projects through 2026. According to the Sun Gazette, Mayor Derek Slaughter says recent resurfacing projects on Little League Blvd and improving signals and intersections have been funded by the state’s Green Light-Go grant program. With upgrades next year planned for Market and Hepburn streets. A major two-way conversion on Fourth Street between Basin and Mulberry is set for later this year, designed to slow traffic and boost downtown business visibility. Crosswalks and streetscape improvements are also planned to enhance safety citywide.
PAWS FOR PETS BRINGS THOUSANDS FOR LOCAL SHELTERS
Weis Markets raised over $177,000 in May to support 127 animal shelters and rescues across the region. According to a press release, the money came from customer donations during the 17th annual “Paws for Pets” campaign, along with a corporate contribution from Weis. Shoppers were invited to round up at checkout or donate fixed amounts. Since launching in 2009, the campaign has brought in more than $3 million. All donations stay local, helping provide food, toys, and supplies for shelter animals.
