JUDGE ASSAULTED IN COURT
A Montour County district judge was assaulted during a preliminary hearing Monday. According to the Daily Item, court documents say 25-year-old Daniel Rhoades became agitated while testifying on harassment charges and struck Judge William Wilt with a closed fist. A state trooper, sheriff’s deputy, and Danville State Hospital security guard quickly restrained Rhoades who now faces new charges including felony aggravated assault. Rhoades was arraigned Monday afternoon, and his next preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at the Montour County Courthouse.
WILLIAMSPORT MAN FOUND GUILTY ON MULTIPLE ROBBERIES
A Lycoming County jury has found a Williamsport man guilty of multiple armed robberies, including holding a gun on a 17-year-old Subway worker in Loyalsock Township in December of 2020. According to North Central PA dot com, prosecutors say Jesse Giddings was tracked by his state parole ankle monitor and caught on surveillance video at the scene. He had also been convicted of robbing a Family Dollar and Boost Mobile in Williamsport while on parole. Giddings was found guilty of robbery, firearms violations, theft, assault, and terroristic threats. A fourth robbery case remains on the trial list.
WAHS SETS UP FRESHMEN FOR SUCCESS WITH LINK CREW
Williamsport Area High School has launched it’s first-ever Link Crew program to help freshmen transition into high school. The 15,000 dollar grant is funded through the district’s Education Foundation, pairing ninth graders with trained juniors and seniors who serve as mentors throughout the year. The school says the goal is to create connections from day one, giving students a calmer, more supportive start. More than 75 upperclassmen trained as peer leaders and led orientation on the first day of school. The program continues with monthly check-ins focused on leadership, involvement and community-building.
LABOR DAY CLOSURES AT PENN DOT
PennDOT says all driver’s license and photo centers, including the Harrisburg full-service center, will be closed from this Saturday, August 30th through Monday, September 1st for Labor Day. Online services remain available 24/7 at dmv.pa.gov, allowing drivers to renew licenses, photo IDs and vehicle registrations, schedule driving exams and more without any added fees. PennDOT urges customers to plan ahead if they need in-person services before the holiday weekend.
GUILTY PLEA FOR WOMAN WHO CAUSE SCHOOL LOCKDOWN
A Clinton County woman has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a shooting that forced two schools into lockdown last May. According to North Central PA dot com, 37 year-old Ashley Snook admitted to terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, and disorderly conduct after firing a 9-millimeter pistol during a domestic dispute at her Mill Hall residence. The property borders Central Mountain Middle and Mill Hall Elementary schools, which were locked down as state police responded and took Snook into custody. Sentencing is set for October 14, when victim impact statements will be considered.
PROTEST AT CLEARFIELD COUNTY ICE FACILITY
About 500 people gathered in Philipsburg Sunday calling for the closure of the Moshannon Valley Processing Center and for its federal contract, set to expire in 2026, not to be renewed. Demonstrators held events at Cold Stream Dam and Philipsburg Memorial Park before a vigil outside the facility on Route 322. The privately run immigration detention center, operated by GEO Group, is the largest of its kind in the Northeast. The facility holds immigrants for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under a contract with Clearfield County.
LOCAL CHARITY SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO EXPAND FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM
The American Rescue Workers is calling for volunteers as it prepares to launch a new Client Choice Food Pantry, designed to serve families with more dignity and flexibility. The pantry currently provides food for about a thousand families each month, and the new setup will allow guests to select items like canned goods, pasta and cereal, much like a grocery store. Volunteers are needed to guide clients through the process and help carry food. The pantry is open at various hours Monday through Friday. For information, visit arwwilliamsport.org.
FORMER COACH AT LINE MOUNTIAIN TO BE HONORED FRIDAY
The Line Mountain School District will honor the late Darwin “Shubby” Marquette with a press box dedication at Eagle Stadium Friday night. Events start at 6:30 with a band performance, followed by a 6:45 ceremony before the Eagles host Newport at 7. Marquette spent 57 years as an assistant coach after Trevorton merged into Line Mountain, and school officials credit him with a lasting impact on players and the community. Fans are encouraged to wear No. 13, his football number, in his memory.

* Mets pitcher Nolan McLean became the first Mets pitcher to win his first three MLB starts, tossing eight innings Wednesday night in a 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that completed a three-game sweep.
