MILTON TEACHER PASSES FROM MEDICAL EMERGENCY AT SCHOOL
The Milton Area School District is mourning the loss of second-grade teacher Sonya Ferguson, who died Wednesday morning after a medical emergency at Baugher Elementary School. Superintendent Dr. John Bickhart said the district’s top priority was supporting students and staff, with crisis teams, counselors, and social workers on site throughout the day. NO VERDICT IN WILLIAMSPORT MURDER CASE
A jury in Williamsport failed to reach a verdict Wednesday in the murder case against 44-year-old Dawud Rogers, accused of killing 31-year-old Michael Blackwell. According to the Sun Gazette, after three days of testimony and two rounds of deliberations, the jury declared itself deadlocked, and Judge Nancy Butts declared a mistrial. District Attorney Tom Marino says Rogers will remain in custody, and prosecutors plan a retrial. The trial featured conflicting evidence, including phone records, surveillance video, and witness testimony, with the defense questioning the credibility of key witnesses. No new trial date has been set.
TRAIN RIDE IN NOVEMBER TO BENEFIT LOCAL PROGRAMS
The North Shore Railroad Company will host its 2nd Annual Veterans Benefit Voyage on Saturday, November 1. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS SERVICE THIS WEEKEND
Valley residents are invited to bring their pets to Beaver Lutheran Church in Beavertown this Sunday for a Blessing of the Animals. According to the Daily Item, the service begins at 1 p.m. at the church on Route 522, held in honor of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. All pets are welcome as long as they’re leashed, enclosed, and not dangerous or poisonous. Those with shy animals can bring a photo or item of theirs instead. RENOVO MAN WITH SEVEN WARRANTS IN CUSTODY
Police in Renovo have captured a 43-year-old man wanted on seven outstanding warrants. According to North central pa dot ocm, Officers tried to arrest Darryl McDermit Jr. last Friday evening near Erie Avenue and Fourth Street when he allegedly ran, but he was caught a short time later along Ontario Avenue. McDermit is charged with evading arrest and was sent to the Clinton County Correctional Facility on $1,500 bail in addition to the prior warrants. One case stems from an incident earlier this month when he allegedly hurled a trash can into the road. His preliminary hearing is set for October 27.
ONLINE FUNDRAISING FOR ZOOK FAMILY
The family devastated in last weekend’s fatal horse and buggy crash in Northumberland County is now receiving community support through an online fundraiser. State police say 39-year-old John Koperna of Pottsville admitted he may have fallen asleep before his car struck the buggy carrying Ervan and Leah Zook and their four children. Their 7-year-old daughter died at the scene, and their 9-year-old son later died at the hospital, while relatives remain hospitalized with serious injuries. A GoFundMe page has been launched under Zook Family Fundraiser to help the family.
PUBLIC COMMENTS WANTED FOR STATE RAIL PLAN PennDOT has released its updated Pennsylvania State Rail Plan for public review and comment. The plan, revised every four years, addresses safety, passenger and freight rail, funding, environmental impact, and long-term economic growth. Officials say it also outlines opportunities for rail improvements and investment over the next 25 years. Pennsylvanians can submit comments online through October 24, and a virtual public meeting is scheduled for October 16. PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll says with more operating railroads than any other state, public input is vital to shaping the future of rail in the Commonwealth.
HALLOWEEN AND TOUCH A TRUCK EVENT IN SUNBURY
