FATAL FIRE IN BUFFALO TOWNSHIP
A 67-year-old woman died in her home after a fire tore through the Buffalo Township residence early Saturday morning. According to the Standard Journal, state police identified the victim as Daisy Russell, the home’s only occupant. Fire crews arrived to find the house fully engulfed in flames and later discovered Russell’s body in a bedroom once the blaze was under control. Mifflinburg Fire Chief Nick Walter said there were no audible smoke detectors and that the structure was too consumed to attempt a rescue.The cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation. Multiple departments assisted at the scene, along with state police and the Union County coroner’s office.
MUNCY CREEK TOWNSHIIP GUN SHOP A TARGET FOR THIEVES
Early Sunday morning, a Muncy Creek Township firearms store was targeted again in a break-in, with the suspects using a stolen Hyundai to ram into the front of the shop, causing at least $5,000 in damage, but the thieves failed to get inside. State police later pursued the stolen car from Sunday’s incident which ended in a crash in Loyalsock Township in which the suspects fled the scene According to the Sun Gazette, the shop opened up again just three months ago after it had been burglarized last Christmas when six handguns were stolen. No arrests have been made as of today.
GEISINGER UNVEILS PINK BUSSES FOR OCTOBER
Geisinger hospitals across the region are turning pink this month to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to hospital officials, the health system’s bright pink mobile mammogram bus will travel to Selinsgrove this week, offering on-site screenings at 201 Roosevelt Boulevard. Doctors recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40. Appointments can be made through MyGeisinger or by calling 570-271-6000.
EARLY DISMISSAL AT MILTON FOR FUNERAL SERVICES THURSDAY
The Milton Area School District will have an early dismissal Thursday, Oct. 9, as the community gathers for funeral services honoring second-grade teacher Sonya Ferguson, who passed away Oct. 1 after a medical emergency at school. Elementary students will leave at 11:45 a.m., secondary students at 12:30 p.m. Superintendent Dr. John Bickhart thanked staff, students, and families for their support, saying the district remains focused on supporting one another and honoring Ms. Ferguson’s memory during this heartbreaking time.
TWO INJURED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION
Two Shamokin residents were hospitalized after a head-on crash Friday morning on Route 901, about a quarter-mile west of Excelsior. According to the News Item, Coal Township Police say Emma Kramer was driving north when she swerved to avoid a pickup in her lane, but the vehicles collided head-on in the southbound lane. The truck’s driver, Jose Santiago, told police he was distracted, checking an ATV in his rear-view mirror just before impact. Both vehicles were heavily damaged, and rescue crews had to cut the roof off Santiago’s truck to free him. Both drivers were taken to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. The crash remains under investigation.
MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED ARSON IN BRIAR CREEK
A Briar Creek Borough man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly trying to burn down his neighbor’s home early on August 3. State police say Joseph H. McBratney approached the house with a blowtorch, a bottle of unknown liquid, and insulation material. The homeowner, Mark McNeal, woke to flames under his porch and put out the fire with water. Security footage reportedly showed McBratney carrying the items moments before the blaze. He’s now charged with two counts of arson, reckless endangerment, and endangering a building, though a previous attempted homicide charge was withdrawn.
PURPLE ALERT FOR THE VULNERABLE TO BE INTRODUCED IN HARRISBURG
A Columbia County lawmaker is proposing new legislation to help locate missing or vulnerable residents. State Representative Robert Leadbeter plans to introduce Aiden’s Law, creating a “Purple Alert” system in Pennsylvania. According to North Central PA dot com, the proposal follows the death of seven-year-old Aiden Ha, a nonverbal autistic boy from Bloomsburg who drowned after going missing over the weekend. Similar to Amber and Silver Alerts, Purple Alerts would quickly notify police and the public when someone with cognitive or developmental disabilities disappears.
KICK BALL DAY WITH LOCAL KIDS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT
Kids from kindergarten through fifth grade will team up with Pennsylvania State Police, Williamsport officers, and local faith leaders this weekend for a day of kickball and teamwork, aimed at building trust between youth and law enforcement. According to the Sun Gazette, the annual “Kickball with Cops” derby, part of the national Faith and Blue Initiative, is free and sponsored by Keystone Scholars and the Pennsylvania Treasury, offering snacks and a chance for kids to see officers as part of their community support system. The event is this Saturday, at Firetree Place, 600 Campbell Street, from 10am to 1pm, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
