NO FIRE FOUND DURING FIRE CALL IN SHAMOKIN
Fire crews rushed to Mill Road Square in Shamokin Tuesday afternoon after reports of an alarm and a strong odor inside the building. The Shamokin Fire Bureau and several mutual-aid companies responded, staging trucks and preparing hoses as a precaution. Firefighters entered the building but found no visible smoke or flames. The complex houses multiple offices, including the Shamokin Police Department, Street Department, and local health services. After about 30 minutes of investigation, crews determined there was no fire threat and cleared the scene. No injuries or damage were reported, and operations at the building have since resumed normally.
50 YEARS FOR MAN WHO FIREBOMBED GOVERNOR’S MANSION
A man who firebombed Pennsylvania’s governor’s mansion while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were inside has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. According to North Cetnral PA dot com, 38 year old Cody Balmer pleaded guilty to attempted murder, terrorism, arson, and assault in the April attack that caused extensive damage to the Harrisburg residence. Prosecutors say Balmer scaled the security fence and threw gasoline-filled beer bottles to ignite the fire shortly after the family celebrated Passover. No one was hurt, but the flames charred several rooms before being contained. Balmer later told police he planned to attack Shapiro with a sledgehammer if confronted.
POLICE CALLS WILL BE ENCRYPTED IN NORTHUMBERLAND
Police radio traffic in Northumberland County is now encrypted – as of this week, cutting off public access to scanner broadcasts. According to the Daily Item, District Attorney Michael O’Donnell says the move protects officer safety and sensitive operations following increased threats against law enforcement, including a recent trooper shooting. Fire and EMS communications will stay open, and police in Milton and Watsontown will continue using non-encrypted systems. Officials say criminals have used scanner apps to monitor police movements, creating serious safety risks.
ARTS FEST THIS WEEKEND AT SHIKELLAMY HIGH SCHOOL
The Shikellamy School District will hold its first-ever arts festival this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school parking lot on Walnut Street in Sunbury. The free event will feature student artwork, craft vendors, and food trucks, with proceeds supporting the high school art department. Art teacher Jen Shay says the goal is to showcase student talent and involve the community. That evening, the district will also host a Class of 2028 Glow Run 5K at the All Sports Complex, with registration starting at 5 p.m. and the race beginning at 7.
PORT TREVORTON MAN ARRESTED AFTER HIGH SPEED CHASE
A Port Trevorton man is facing a long list of charges after police say he led them on a high-speed motorcycle chase through Sunbury last week. According to the Standard-Journal, officers say 42-year-old Mark Herrold Jr. fled at speeds topping 75 miles per hour before crashing on a grassy hill along Island Boulevard. Police say Herrold then tried to run but was caught after a brief foot pursuit. He showed signs of impairment and admitted his actions would likely land him back in jail. Herrold’s license was already suspended for a prior DUI. A preliminary hearing is set for October 21 before Judge Rachel Wiest Benner.
PROFIT FOR CLEARFIELD COUNTY FOR SUPPORTING ICE FACILITY
Clearfield County is set to earn $1 million over five years for serving as a middleman between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the private contractor operating the Moshannon Valley Processing Center near Philipsburg. According to Spotlight PA, the facility, the largest immigration detention center in the Northeast, is under scrutiny following a detainee’s death and reports of poor conditions. Local advocates have urged county leaders not to renew contracts when they expire next year, saying profit shouldn’t come at the cost of human suffering. FLICK RECOGNIZED IN PA FOR TOP POLITICAL PERFORMANCE
State Representative Jamie Flick of South Williamsport has been recognized as one of Pennsylvania’s top-performing new lawmakers. HALLOWEEN PARADE IN SUNBURY THURSDAY
The streets of Sunbury will be filled with costumes, community spirit tomorrow night for the annual Sunbury Halloween Parade. Organizers say they’re still accepting float entries and hope to see more than 30 floats again this year. The parade begins at 7 p.m. at Shikellamy High School and travels along Market Street to Weis Markets on North 4th Street. Mayor Josh Brosious says the event supports the city’s fire police, who help keep first responders and residents safe year-round. Float entries can still be made through City Hall at 570-286-7820.
