SMOKE IN JERSEY SHORE HIGH SCHOOL CAUSES EVACUATION
Students and staff at Jersey Shore High School were evacuated around noon yesterday after smoke filled the cafeteria and kitchen. According to the Sun Gazette fire officials say a heating motor on the roof malfunctioned, pushing smoke through the building’s ductwork. Citizens Hose Fire officials say there was no fire, but maintenance crews worked quickly to repair the issue. Exhaust fans helped clear the smoke, and everyone was allowed back inside about 30 minutes later.

PROPERTY VALUES COULD DIP FROM SOLAR FARM PROJECT
Fourteen homes in Muncy Creek Township could lose property value if a proposed 33-megawatt solar farm is built. According to the Sun Gazette, appraiser Carl Nolan testified the project along Clarkstown Road could cause “diminution in value” to nearby homes, regardless of repairs. His report was reviewed Wednesday by township supervisors as Bollinger Solar seeks approval for the industrial-scale array. Nolan told officials similar projects have reduced home values by as much as five percent. A public hearing on the plan is set for November 19th at the Muncy Area Volunteer Fire Company.
BILL TO COVER COLON CANCER SCREENINGS PASSES THE PA HOUSE
The Pennsylvania House has overwhelmingly approved a bill to expand insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screenings. House Bill 1123, sponsored by a Representative in Philadelphia, would lower the eligible screening age from 50 to 45, aligning state law with updated American Cancer Society guidelines. The measure also adds several types of tests and covers follow-up colonoscopies after positive results. Gallagher, a colorectal cancer survivor, says the change will save lives. The bill passed the House 197 to 6 and now heads to the state Senate for consideration.

CONTROVERSIAL VOLUNTEER AT WARRIOR RUN WILL NOT SERVE
The Warrior Run School District says Scott Shaffer will not serve as a volunteer after all, just two days after the school board approved him in a narrow 5-4 vote. According to the Standard Journal, the district announced yesterday that Shaffer and school officials mutually agreed he would not participate. The move followed public concern over past allegations that led to Shaffer’s teaching certificate being revoked in 2020. The district noted he had passed all required background checks and clearances, but emphasized maintaining a safe, positive, student-focused environment.
SKILL GAME MACHINE FEES TO RISE IN SUNBURY
Vendors offering Pennsylvania Skill Games in Sunbury will see their annual fee triple from $100 to $300 per machine beginning in 2026. According to the Daily Item, city Council approved the increase Monday night to help balance the city’s $4.8 million budget. Councilman Jim Brumbach proposed the hike, and warned that late payments would double to $600 per machine, with unpaid units subject to removal. Some business owners pushed back, saying higher fees could hurt small operators already struggling with fluctuating profits.
