WOMAN WORKING TO REPAY MONEY STOLEN FROM FOOD BANK
A Montgomery woman who admitted stealing more than $40,000 from the Footprints of Montgomery food bank remains free while she works to repay the money. According to North Central PA dot com, Shawn Gawblick, now known as Shawn Coles, pleaded guilty Friday to felony theft before President Judge Nancy Butts. Investigators say she used the food bank’s account for personal expenses, including Amazon and utility bills, and withdrew nearly $33,000 from ATMs. Coles has already repaid about a third of what she owes. Under her plea deal, she’ll avoid state prison but could still serve up to two years in county jail once she’s sentenced.
JOINDER BOARD RECOVERING AFTER PA BUDGET IMPASSE
The Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board is taking steps to recover from the months-long state budget impasse, approving temporary deferments on bank loan payments and vendor contracts as state funding begins to flow again. According to the Record Online, the board ratified a deal with Woodlands Bank to delay payments on more than $2 million in credit lines until January. Executive Director Keith Wagner says the Joinder also shortened business hours and secured three-month suspensions from its parking and janitorial service providers to preserve cash. Officials say they’ll repay obligations as soon as state reimbursements arrive.
DUI PATROLS ON TAP FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON
Local officials have kicked off “Operation Safe Holiday” a countywide DUI-prevention push running through New Year’s Day. PennDOT says the effort includes roving patrols and sobriety checkpoints after 857 alcohol-related crashes statewide last holiday season killed 18 people. Representatives from PennDOT, Uber, Geisinger Jersey Shore and local police urged drivers to “choose your ride” before drinking, noting a DUI can cost more than 10 thousand dollats Lycoming Regional Police Chief Chris Kriner says officers will be out looking for impaired drivers and reminds residents to call 911 if they spot someone who may be drunk behind the wheel.
SHIKELLAMY STUDENTS DECORATE DOWNTOWN SUNBURY
More than 150 Shikellamy fifth-graders took over downtown Sunbury Friday, turning Market Street storefronts into a holiday gallery. According to the Daily Item, the project is led by reading specialist and Sunbury Hill Neighborhood treasurer Renee Albertson, who along with the students, spent the day painting Christmas scenes ahead of Friday’s Santa parade. Mayor Josh Brosious thanked the young artists and volunteers, saying their creativity brings the city’s holiday spirit to life each year.
TRIAL POSTPONED FOR MIFFLINBURG MAN
A sexual assault trial that was set to begin today in Union County has been postponed. According to the Daily Item, Judge Michael Piecuch granted a continuance for 44-year-old Timothy Dowhower of Mifflinburg, who’s accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Kelly Township. The delay gives the defense time to hire an expert witness, pushing the trial to late January. Dowhower faces multiple charges, including aggravated indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor.
PROPERTY REASSESSMENT GROUP TO HOLD INFO MEETING
Tyler Technologies, the firm handling the countywide property reassessment, will hold a public information meeting Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Loyalsock High School. The session will be held in rooms D10 and D11, is open to anyone with questions or concerns about the process. Officials say the first phase of the reassessment began last fall and will continue through March.
I-80 REST STOPS IN COLUMBIA COUNTY REOPENED
Columbia County’s eastbound and westbound rest areas on Interstate 80 have reopened. PennDOT announced the opening after a $6.7 million in renovations that closed the facilities for 9 months. Work included upgraded utilities, new bathroom fixtures, a generator, and a new sewage treatment plant. PennDOT also announced that the primitive roadside rest area on Routes 11/15 at McKees Half Falls in Snyder County will close for the season on Monday, December 1st, and is set to reopen in the spring. CU-LOCK HAVEN HOLDS SUCCESSFUL HUNGER BOWL FOOD DRIVE
Commonwealth University–Lock Haven wrapped up its annual Hunger Bowl in October with more than 4,000 donations to support the Haven Cupboard food pantry. Thirteen student and faculty groups took part, with the Social Work Club leading student organizations at 309 donations, and the library’s “No Limits” team dominating the faculty and staff competition with more than 2,400 items. “No Limits” will be treated to lunch by interim President Jeff Osgood, while the Social Work Club gets a $100 contribution to its account. The university says the event shows the strong, ongoing commitment to fighting hunger on campus.
