CRASH ON ROUTE 6 TUESDAY KILLED TWO, INJURED TWO
A crash on Route 6 in Sullivan Township in Tioga County yesterday afternoon claimed the life of a Towanda Area School District vehicle driver and a child passenger and seriously injured two other children just after 2:30pm. According to Pennsylvania State Police 66 year old Ronald Wickwire was driving east on Route 6 near Bradford Road and suddenly entered the westbound lanes striking a commercial tractor trailer. Wickwire and a nine year old boy were pronounced dead at the scene and a 12 year old boy and 6 year old girl were flown to Geisinger Medical Center. Route 6 remained closed at the Gray Valley Road intersection for several hours as crews from Blossburg and Mansfield worked to clear about 50 gallons of spilled fuel and debris. Route 6 reopened yesterday at about 6:30pm. The superintendent of the Towanda Area School District expressed sorrow over the crash stating in a social media post that counseling for students will be available this week in the aftermath of the accident. Pennsylvania State Police say they will continue the investigation.
STORMS STRIKE NORTH CENTRAL PA, TREES AND WIRES DOWN
Storms tore through the area last night before 8pm bringing down trees and wires in several communities. According to the Daily item, wires came down and a structure on Julia Street collapsed in Sunbury. Police closed Front and Reagan, and Susquehanna and Edison avenues, to clear the building debris. In Lycoming County, PennDOT reports Little Pine Creek Road between Route 44 and Little Pine Creek Camp Area Road in Cummings Township is closed this morning for downed trees and utilities. In Union County White Deer Pike between Dyer Road in White Deer Township and Mile Run Road in West Buffalo Township reopened this morning. Check 511PA.com for road closures 24/7.
PUBLIC MEETING TONIGHT BEFORE NORRY REASSESSMENT
There will be a public meeting for residents to learn more about the upcoming property tax reassessment throughout Northumberland County. According to county officials the meeting is a day before data collectors will begin visiting out in the county to gain accurate assessments of the properties. Texas-based Tyler Technologies will host the first public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. April 30th at Shikellamy High school.
WEIS MARKETS DONATIONS GO TO SGP
The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership is one of four recipients of funds from Weis Markets for their annual Earth Day donation total of 10 thousand dollars. According to the Daily Item, the 25 hundred dollar donation is for SGP to support projects and programs that connect people to the outdoors and protect the beautiful places along the Greenway. The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership works to connect communities and promote healthy living along the Susquehanna River.
THREE ALARM FIRE IN DUNNSTABLE TOWNSHIP
There was a two-alarm fire in Dunnstable Township Monday that initially brought firefighters from three counties to the scene before a third alarm was called and a wildfire reported. According to the Lock Haven Express, the fire at the structure at the old Asperline log home production area next to DMI International at 1564 Woodward Avenue was reported at about 2pm and wind and dry conditions escalated the fire to the additional alarm. There is no official cause of the blaze revealed at this time. Billowing smoke was seen for miles as crews from Clinton, Lycoming and Centre Counties battled the fire.
MORE THAN 17 YEARS IN JAIL FOR MAN WHO SHOT STATE TROOPER
A man from Watsontown who pleaded guilty to felony aggravated assault for a non-lethal shooting of a state trooper in April of 2023 was sentenced Monday in Northumberland County Court. According to the Daily Item, 21-year-old Hunter Shaheen who was 19 at the time of the crime, was given a prison term of 17 to 34 years. Police say Shaheen shot a trooper who was assisting Watsontown Borough police in the leg after he fled the scene from a domestic dispute. The exchange of gunfire near the intersection with Merrill Drive, in Delaware Township, also wounded Shaheen. The officer was later cleared of that shooting following an investigation.
CU PRESIDENT TO STEP DOWN
The president of Commonwealth University will step down at the end of July to pursuit a new academic administration position. According to a press release, Dr. Bashar W. Hanna who served as CU’s first president has accepted the position as vice chancellor for strategic initiatives for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. While the President of CU, Hanna led the integration of three universities into one university, creating an affordable State System, improving graduation rates, narrowing equity gaps and securing record-breaking philanthropic support. He will start with PASSHE August 1st.
VETERANS BEING SOUGHT TO SERVE ON STATE VETERAN’S COMMISSION
Citizens of character and competence in the Commonwealth are being sought to serve on the State Veterans’ Commission as a member-at-large for a 5 year term. According to the Adjutant General, the member-at-large position, by statute, must be a veteran and with the appointment will advise the adjutant general, the governor and others, and advocate on behalf of all the commonwealth’s veterans.
