FIRE IN MONTOURSVILLE LEAVES FAMILY HOMELESS
A Montoursville family is homeless after a fire broke out late Sunday afternoon at their home on North Washington Street. According to NorthCentralPA.com, flames were spotted around 5:15 p.m., coming from beneath the back porch and reaching the roof. A borough patrolman tried to contain the blaze with a garden hose before firefighters arrived and knocked it down within 15 minutes. No one was home at the time. The Red Cross is helping the family, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES IN DOUBLE HOMICIDE
An apparent double homicide is still under investigation in Schuylkill County. State Police say a 63-year-old man and a 40-year-old man are dead, and a 31-year-old woman is in critical condition after a shooting inside a Shenandoah home on West Centre Street around 1 a.m. Thursday. Responding officers forced entry during a welfare check and were met by a juvenile asking for help. One man was found dead downstairs, and another man and the injured woman were found upstairs. Police believe the 40-year-old male was both a suspect and a victim. The case is considered isolated and police have not released the identities of those involved in this ongoing case.
MAN ESCAPES FIRE BY LEAP FROM SECOND STORY
A man jumped from a second-story window to escape a house fire in Lock Haven late Friday night. The fire broke out just before 9 p.m. at a home on Linden Street. Crews from multiple departments responded to the scene. The man who jumped suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Four people living in the home were displaced, and a neighboring house also sustained damage. The fire started in a second-floor bedroom, according to the Lock Haven Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
“THE SPUR” GETS SAFETY UPGRADE
A new automated truck warning system is being installed on Route 15 southbound in Williamsport to help prevent rollovers at the area known as “the spur.” According to PennDOT, crews will begin work just south of the West Fourth Street interchange starting tomorrow July 8th. The $880,000 project includes overhead signs, vehicle detectors, and flashing beacons. Drivers should expect overnight lane restrictions Sunday through Friday nights during the project. PennDOT says the system should be in place by fall, weather permitting.
PELLET GUN SHOOTER FACES CHARGES
An 18-year-old Jersey Shore man is facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting two people with a pellet gun. According to Northcentral PA. Com, police say Gage Michael Murray first hit a child crossing Allegheny Street in May, then opened fire on another victim June 9 at community basketball courts, striking them six times. Surveillance video shows Murray arriving by bike and pulling the weapon from his hoodie. He faces charges including simple assault, harassment, and recklessly endangering another person. Police say he lied during the initial investigation, and a relative later revealed his confession.
OVER 100 TEENS INVOLVED IN FIGHT IN WILLIAMSPORT
Police were called to a large fight involving up to 100 teenagers in Williamsport behind Wegmans and Kohl’s shortly after Fourth of July celebrations in the city. Officers say the juveniles, many unaccompanied, began physically assaulting each other and some even confronted law enforcement. Backup was called in from multiple agencies, including State Police and the Lycoming County Sheriff’s Office. Officers used pepper spray and detained several teens to regain control. The fight continued for nearly an hour, and charges including disorderly conduct are expected. The investigation is ongoing
VACANT STATE HOSPITAL DRAWS TRESSPASSERS
Six people have been charged with trespassing at the former Laurelton Center in Union County. According to NorthcentralPA dot com, State Police say two young men from State College were caught exploring the closed hospital on June 12. Later that month, three men from Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and West Virginia were also cited. The Laurelton Center, a 266-acre facility off Route 45 about 15 miles west of Mifflinburg, closed in 1998 and has become a target for urban explorers drawn by its history and abandoned buildings. Police warn the site is private property and violators will be prosecuted.
CONCERNS RAISED BY RESIDENTS OVER PROPOSED HOUSING
Lycoming County’s Wolf Township Supervisors have rejected a waiver request tied to a proposed housing development that would add more than 100 new homes. According to the Williamsport Sun Gazette, residents at the recent meeting raised concerns about stormwater runoff in an already troubled area. While the waiver focused on roadway design—not drainage—the planning commission declined to recommend it, citing unanswered questions and engineering concerns. Revisions to the proposal are planned. The development, which borders Hughesville, remains under review.
