MAN FACING FELONY PORNOGRPHY CHARGES HEADS TO TRIAL
A Williamsport man will face more than 70 counts of possessing child sexual abuse material. According to North Central PA dot com, Judge Christian Frey ruled this week that 49-year-old Chad Hagemeyer must stand trial on 77 felony charges after pornographic images of children were found on his iPad by a repairman. Prosecutors say they were surprised to learn Hagemeyer has been free on supervised release since Aug. 8, despite previously being denied bail, but bail had been changed to $125,000 monetary on July 26th. Special conditions ban him from contacting minors or using the internet. He also faces one count of criminal use of a cellphone.
CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED
State police have identified the man killed in Tuesday night’s violent crash off I-180 near Montoursville. According to the Lycoming County Coroner’s Office, 63-year-old William E. Scott of Dallas, Texas was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. from multiple blunt force trauma. Investigators say Scott’s rental SUV went airborne and slammed into an embankment on Brushy Ridge Road. An off-duty trooper witnessed the crash and stopped to help. A 70-year-old Dallas-area woman riding with Scott was seriously injured and remains in intensive care at UPMC Williamsport. The crash remains under investigation by state police and the coroner’s office.
EUREKA ORDERED TO REMOVE OIL WASTE FROM FORMER FACILITY
The state Department of Environmental Protection has ordered Eureka Resources to remove all oil and gas wastewater from its shuttered Second Street plant in Williamsport after a major spill into the Susquehanna River. According to North Central PA dot com, now the DEP officials say about 16,000 gallons leaked from a corroded tank on August 17th , with half flowing into storm drains leading to the West Branch. Cleanup costs are estimated at $250,000. Investigators found disconnected safety alarms and say the site was operating illegally. Eureka has 30 days to remove the waste and faces possible civil penalties.
911 MEMORIAL RIDE ON THE WAY
The roar of motorcycles will return to Lycoming County on Thursday, September 11, for the annual 9-11 Memorial Ride. The 42-mile route passes through 14 municipalities and has grown into one of the region’s largest community events, drawing up to 40,000 spectators. The ride began just days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and continues each year under the motto “Never Forget.” A memorial program will precede the 6 p.m. departure at the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Company in Montgomery. MAN ARRESTED AFTER FIRING A GUN WHILE INTOXICATED
Lycoming Regional Police say a 56-year-old man is facing charges after a shots-fired incident Tuesday night in Old Lycoming Township. According to the Sun Gazette, officers responded around 8 p.m. to Spring Run Road and Wheatland Avenue and heard numerous rifle shots near a Spring Run Road property. Police allege Todd Joseph Leta was firing a semi-automatic rifle while under the influence, shooting into his shed along the roadway. Multiple agencies responded before Leta was taken into custody without incident. Police seized firearms and drugs and charged Leta with reckless endangerment and other offenses. He was released on $50,000 unsecured bail.
SUSPECT IN SHOOTING AT CABLE SERVICES SEEKS BAIL
The Lycoming County businessman charged in the shooting death of his brother-in-law is asking a federal judge to grant him bail. Sixty-seven-year-old Kenneth Michaels admits to shooting John Roskowski in the lobby of Cable Services in Old Lycoming Township last August, but claims he acted in fear for his life. County Judge Ryan Tira and the state Superior Court previously denied bail, citing evidence that the act was premeditated. Michaels’ attorney argues Pennsylvania’s no-bail clause for capital cases is unconstitutional and violates due process.
PIG ROAST FOR PENN STATE ALUMNI SUNDAY
The Greater Susquehanna Valley Penn State Chapter will hold its 45th annual Pig Roast and Scholarship Awards this Sunday at the New Berlin American Legion pavilion. Three thousand dollar scholarships will be presented to local students heading to Penn State or Penn Tech. Special guests include PSU cheerleaders, the Nittany Lion, and former All-American linebacker Michael Mauti, now an associate athletic director at Penn State. Events start at noon with lunch at 1:30. Two-time World Series champion Johnny Damon will be in Williamsport tonight for the annual Williamsport Welcomes the World festival. Damon will greet fans from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. outside the Williamsport/Lycoming County Chamber of Commerce. Streets in the central business district will close down for the festival before 5pm, which features music, kids’ activities, food, and vendors. On Saturday, Damon will serve as third base coach for the Little League Challenger Division Exhibition Game at Volunteer Stadium. That leads into the International Championship at 12:30pm and the U.S. Championship at 3 p.m. AT Lamade Stadium.
