The race for a two-year seat on Sunbury City Council remains deadlocked after two provisional ballots were counted Friday morning. According to the Daily Item, both candidates, Victoria Rosancrans and Andrew Ramos, picked up one vote each, leaving the race tied at 752 votes apiece. Northumberland County election officials say a final decision on how to settle the tie will come November 21. The seat was vacated earlier this year when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer.
NEW FIRE SERVICE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY AND SOUTHSIDE
South Williamsport residents will soon have faster, round-the-clock fire and rescue coverage. City Council has approved an intergovernmental fire services agreement between South Williamsport Borough, its volunteer fire department, and the Williamsport Bureau of Fire. Starting November 15, the city will provide fire suppression and quick response services, replacing the borough’s previous part-time contract. Borough Manager Steve Cappelli says the new deal adds only $2,500 a month and won’t require a tax increase—bringing residents peace of mind and stronger emergency protection.

SOME SCHOOLS TAKING LOANS TO COVER COSTS DURING BUDGET IMPASSE
With Pennsylvania’s state budget over 130 days overdue, schools are feeling the strain. The Mount Carmel Area School District voted last week to borrow up to $4 million through a short-term loan to keep operations running. The standard journal reports that Superintendent Pete Cheddar said the district relies on state funding for nearly 70% of its $26 million budget. The loan carries a 4% interest rate, costing taxpayers up to $97,000. Across Pennsylvania, public schools have missed out on more than $5 billion in payments, forcing districts to freeze hiring, cut programs, and take on costly loans while legislators remain deadlocked in Harrisburg.

SHAMOKIN SUCCESSFULLY APPEALS FEMA RULING
Shamokin residents are getting major financial relief after the city successfully appealed FEMA’s updated flood maps. Working with SEDA-COG, Shamokin challenged the 2021 maps that had expanded high-risk flood zones and would have forced many homeowners and businesses to buy flood insurance for the first time. FEMA has now accepted new data showing fewer properties are at real risk. Mayor Mike McLaughlin calls it “a major win” for the city, saying accurate maps mean fair treatment and smarter planning for Shamokin’s future.
