PRIOR FELON STOPPED WITH EXPLOSIVES, GUNS IN THE CAR
A Millmont man is facing 33 charges after police say they found homemade explosives, guns, drugs, and counterfeit cash during a traffic stop in Mifflinburg. Police say 41-year-old Bret Leitzel appeared impaired when they stopped him at a Sheetz early November first. A bomb squad later found two explosive devices, several loaded firearms, and 1,700 dollars in fake bills. Leitzel, a convicted felon, was arrested and threatened officers after his arrest. His bail was set at 35 thousand dollars, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 25.
COUNCIL APPROVES PLAN FOR EGG PROCESSING PLANT
Williamsport City Council has approved a land development plan for HBF Foods to expand an egg processing plant on Reach Road. The project adds more than 40,000 square feet to the former Primus facility, along with new parking areas and truck loading docks. HBF Foods processes, cleans, and packages eggs purchased from small farms in Pennsylvania and Maryland, supplying major retailers like Costco. City officials say the expansion could create between 100 and 200 jobs once operations begin. The facility will not involve live animals, and stormwater and access reviews have been approved.
WORK TODAY TO CALIBRATE WARNING SYSTEM AT THE SPUR
Work continues today on the Truck Rollover Warning System at the Route 15, I-180, and Route 220 interchange in Williamsport. Crews will be testing and calibrating the new system between 9 a.m. and noon, with shoulder closures expected between the Foy Avenue and High Street exits. The project is designed to warn truck drivers traveling faster than 45 miles per hour on the southbound curve. PennDOT urges drivers to slow down, stay alert, and use caution through the work zone.
TALEN ENERGY PLANS PUBLIC MEETING NEXT WEEK
A virtual meeting hosted by Talen Energy next Monday night is drawing strong interest across Montour County. The company is seeking to rezone nearly 1,300 acres near the Washingtonville power plant from agricultural to industrial use. Recent local meetings have been tense, with residents demanding transparency about the project. Talen says the session will outline its rezoning plans and take public questions. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. November 17. Details and login information are available at talenenergy.com.
MAN ARRESTED FOR STABBING DELIVERY DRIVER
A Williamsport man is behind bars after a late-night stabbing downtown Friday. Police say 24-year-old Tristan Pequignot was arrested minutes after the attack, carrying a blood-covered knife. The Sun Gazette reports that he stabbed a delivery worker in the back on West Fourth Street after threatening to kill him. The victim was taken to UPMC Williamsport for treatment. Pequignot, who’s on parole for burglary, faces multiple charges including aggravated assault and terroristic threats, and is being held in the Lycoming County Prison on $125,000 bail.
SHAMOKIN MAN RELEASED FROM JAIL AFTER CONTEMPT APPEAL
The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court has overturned a contempt order that sent Shamokin businessman Robert Gilligbauer to jail over his Upper Augusta Township junkyard. The News Item says that the judges ruled the 2021 order from Northumberland County failed to include a condition for his release, making it invalid. Gilligbauer served 31 days of a 60-day sentence before his appeal succeeded. He thanked his attorney, Richard Feudale, for securing his release. The case stemmed from alleged zoning violations involving disabled vehicles at Gilligbauer’s Route 61 property.
VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED FOR SKILLED RESPONSE
Volunteer firefighters from White Deer Township have been nationally recognized for their quick action during a crash on Interstate 80 last month. AMKUS Rescue Systems honored 11 members of the department with its Star Award for performing a “challenging extrication” involving two tractor-trailers near mile marker 197. Using AMKUS hydraulic tools, firefighters freed a trapped driver by stabilizing the cab, cutting restraints, and performing a dash roll. Chief Jim Messinger said the recognition is appreciated but noted his team doesn’t do it for awards—they do it to help people.
THOUSANDS OF MEALS TO BE PROVIDED IN EASTERN STATES BY GIANT
The GIANT Company is donating nearly 20,000 turkeys and turkey breasts to 35 food banks and community partners across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, enough to provide about 200,000 Thanksgiving meals. Company officials say the effort reflects GIANT’s year-round commitment to helping neighbors in need. Volunteers will also help pack hunger relief boxes and restock shelves. Customers can join in by donating their free turkey certificates in-store through November 27. Details are available at giantfoodstores.com.
