POLICE SHOOT THREATENING MAN IN SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
A South Williamsport man is dead following a police shooting during a response to reported terroristic threats. State police say troopers and South Williamsport officers were called to a home on Fairmont Avenue, where the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot someone. After officers were invited inside, police say the man brandished a gun and was shot. Forty-nine-year-old Michael Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene, No officers were hurt but, all involved members were placed on administrative leave pending a complete and through joint investigation with the Lycoming County District Attorney’s office
POLICE HAVE CUSTODY OF SUSPECT WITH GUN AT SHIKELLAMY HS
A person of interest is in custody following a report of a man with a gun near Shikellamy High School in Sunbury Sunday evening. According to the New Item, police say the situation prompted the evacuation of the school and the cancellation of a scheduled choir concert and other events taking place at the high school. Sunbury Police say officers worked quickly with school officials, no one was injured, and the investigation into the incident is continuing.
SUBPOENAS FILED FOR RECORDS OF GOVERNOR’S HOME UPGRADE PLANS
A Pennsylvania Senate committee has issued subpoenas seeking records on more than one million dollars in state-funded security upgrades at Governor Josh Shapiro’s private Montgomery County home. Republicans on the panel say the move is about transparency and oversight of taxpayer spending, while Democrats argue it oversteps legislative authority and could compromise privacy and safety. The Shapiro administration says the upgrades were recommended by State Police after an arson attack at the governor’s mansion earlier this year, and it’s unclear whether the subpoenas will be challenged in court.
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA IN NEPA
Communities across Northeast and Central Pennsylvania honored fallen service members during Wreaths Across America ceremonies this weekend. According to the News-Item, Sunbury held its first-ever event at Sunbury Cemetery, where three dozen wreaths were placed on veterans’ graves and the names of 288 buried soldiers were read aloud. Similar ceremonies took place in Montoursville, Herndon, Danville, Watsontown, and Allenwood, joining more than 5,600 communities nationwide.
HUNTER SHOT BY PERSON SHOOTING A TARGET IN KULPMONT
A MedEvac helicopter landed Friday afternoon in a remote area near Kulpmont to fly a wounded hunter to the hospital. Police say a 24-year-old man was struck in the chest by a bullet fired by someone target shooting on abandoned coal lands between Route 54 and the borough around four o’clock. Firefighters used a utility vehicle to reach the victim and transport him to the landing zone. The man was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, and police say the incident appears isolated with no danger to the public.
SHOOTING AT ARMORY DEEMED A SUICIDE
New information has been released about Thursday evening’s shooting at the National Range and Armory in Williamsport. According to the Sun-Gazette, police and firefighters were called to the building on Washington Boulevard around 5:45, where a woman was found with a gunshot wound and rushed to UPMC Williamsport. The Lycoming County Coroner has ruled the death a suicide.
GRANTS TO DIGITIZE WILLIAMSPORT CITY RECORDS
The City of Williamsport has been awarded a $125,000 grant to modernize its records system. Funding from the Williamsport/Lycoming Competitive Grant Program at First Community Foundation Partnership will support a document digit tiz ation project, converting decades of paper records into searchable digital files. City officials say the effort will improve efficiency, protect historical documents, and expand public access to municipal records over the coming months.
STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR WOUNDED WARRIORS
Fourth graders at Curtin Intermediate School are continuing a yearlong effort to support the Wounded Warrior Project. Students in Brenda Watkins’ class have raised more than 650 dollars so far through school fundraisers, including a Veterans Day popcorn event. According to the Sun Gazette, the class also hosted a wounded Army veteran and his service dog, earning official recognition from the organization as they work toward a one-thousand-dollar goal by the end of the school year.
