FATAL NEWBERRY CRASH INVOLVED AN RVTA BUS
An investigation is underway after a Williamsport motorist died following a crash with a city bus in the Newberry neighborhood. Lycoming County officials say the man’s SUV slammed into the back of a stopped River Valley Transit Authority bus on West Fourth Street just before six Tuesday evening. According tot eh Sun Gazette, the driver was in his mid-60s and the only person in the SUV. He was taken to UPMC Williamsport, where he was pronounced dead. The bus driver and two passengers were not injured, and the coroner says medical records will be reviewed to determine the cause of death.
PASSPORT SERVICES AT RISK IN WILLIAMSPORT
The James V. Brown Library in Williamsport says it has been notified by the U.S. State Department that non-profit public libraries may be removed from the Passport Acceptance Facility Program under a change in federal policy enforcement. Library officials say the move would eliminate about ninety-thousand dollars a year in revenue and reduce access to walk-in and Saturday passport services in North Central Pennsylvania. The library is urging residents to apply early in January and to contact federal officials as staff work to preserve the service.
LEGISLATION OVER MILK IN US SCHOOLS PASSES IN THE HOUSE
The U.S. House has overwhelmingly passed Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson’s Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2025, clearing the way for whole and two-percent milk to return to school cafeterias. Thompson says the bipartisan bill gives schools flexibility to offer milk options students are more likely to drink, improving nutrition and reducing waste. Supporters say the measure also benefits dairy farmers, and the bill now heads to President Trump’s desk for his signature.
PENNDOT PAINT THE PLOW WINNERS ANNOUNCED
PennDOT has announced the winners of its annual Paint the Plow contest in Montour, Lycoming, and Northumberland counties. Officials say the program promotes winter driving safety while showcasing student creativity, with this year’s theme, “Don’t Race. Allow Some Space,” reminding drivers to give snowplows room to operate safely. Winners include the North Central Secure Treatment Unit in Danville, Montgomery Junior Senior High School, and Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School.
TWO WOMEN ESCAPE A MOBILE HOME FIRE IN LIME RIDGE
A mobile home was destroyed and a family pet perished in a late-night fire in Lime Ridge . The Sunday night fire caused crews to battle bitter cold conditions. Firefighters were dispatched around ten forty-five to Fort Jenkins Lane in Pleasant View Mobile Home Court and found the trailer fully involved, with temperatures near eighteen degrees. Two women escaped safely. Lime Ridge Fire Company, South Centre Township Police, and the Red Cross responded, and a fire marshal is investigating the cause.
UGI SAFETY ALERT ISSUED OVER CARBON MONOXIDE RISKS THIS WINTER
UGI is issuing a safety alert following an increase in reported carbon monoxide emergencies in Pennsylvania. The utility company says carbon monoxide cases usually increase in the winter due to problems with heating equipment or running equipment in enclosed spaces. Residents are urged to make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of your home, and to keep your heating system regularly serviced. Anyone who believes they are experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning should immediately seek fresh air and call 9-1-1.
COLLEGE LOAN HELP AVAILABLE IN 2026
College-bound students and their families should save the date as the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency is offering free virtual webinars to help with completing the twenty-twenty-six, twenty-twenty-seven FAFSA. Line-by-line FAFSA webinars run January fourteenth and March eleventh, with one-on-one completion workshops scheduled for January twenty-second and April twenty-first. PHEAA officials say filing early is key to qualifying for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans. Registration is required and available at pheaa dot org slash virtual.
CLINTON COUNTY GRANT APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE
Applications are now open for the 2026 Clinton County Tourism Grant. The Clinton County Economic Partnership says the annual program supports projects that enhance visitor experiences, promote local attractions, and encourage overnight stays across the county. Grants can be used for things like signage, marketing, renovations, or new tourism programs. Applications are due by March 9, with awards announced in May.
