TWO-ALARM FIRE AT LEWISBURG BUSINESS
Firefighters from across the region were called for a two-alarm fire at Playworld along Route 192 near Lewisburg. First crews on scene just before 8 on Monday night reported smoke coming from the building and immediately requested the second alarm. The fire was brought under control, and firefighters worked to ventilate lingering smoke. According to the Standard Journal, crews from Lewisburg’s William Cameron Engine Company, along with departments from Milton, Mifflinburg, White Deer Township, Union Township, and Shamokin Dam responded. No injuries were reported.
THREE CAR CRASH IN UPPER AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP
A Ranshaw man is facing four citations for allegedly causing a three-vehicle crash December 26th on Route 61 in Upper Augusta Township. Pennsylvania State Police say 29 year old Kyle Gulliver, was driving a Dodge Durango northbound between Carroll Road and the entrance to Whispering Oaks Vineyard when he attempted to pass another vehicle and struck a Ram 1500 head-on, driven by on-duty Northumberland County probation officer Sarah Snyder. The Durango then hit another car. Firefighters had to free Gulliver from his vehicle and Snyder was treated for minor injuries, while the other driver and two children were not hurt.
NEW SPORTS ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR WASD
The Williamsport Area School District has announced a new policy for student attendance at high school sporting events. Effective immediately, any kindergarten through eighth grade student attending Williamsport Area High School games must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is at least 18 years old. District officials say event staff will check compliance at the door, and students without an approved adult escort will be turned away. The district says the change is aimed at improving safety and maintaining an appropriate environment, and families are urged to plan ahead.
NORRY CHECKPOINT FOUND NO DUI ARRESTS FOR NEW YEAR
It was a safe New Year’s Eve in Northumberland County, according to Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers say a DUI checkpoint and roving patrols from December 31st into January 1st resulted in no DUI arrests. Officers contacted 51 motorists, issuing mostly warnings and a handful of citations. State police are reminding drivers to avoid drinking and driving, buckle up, and stay alert on the roads in 2026.
COUPLE IN CUSTODY AFTER ASSAULT OF A TROOPER
A Little Mahanoy Township man already facing multiple criminal charges is now accused of assaulting a state trooper during a traffic stop in West Cameron Township. Pennsylvania State Police say 35-year-old Adam Shingara kicked and tried to punch Trooper Andrew Fritz on Upper Road December 29th as police attempted to arrest him and his wife on active warrants. According to the News Item, investigators say his wife, Erica, encouraged him to flee. A stun gun was used until backup arrived. Adam Shingara’s bail was set at 100-thousand dollars, Erica Shingara’s at 50-thousand.
VOTING TABLED ABOUT DATA CENTER IN MONROE TOWNSHIP
Monroe Township supervisors have tabled a decision on a proposed data center ordinance after residents raised concerns about noise, water use, pollution, and potential damage to the Susquehanna River. The board said it wants to move carefully as data center construction grows nationwide to support artificial intelligence, amid regional debate tied to energy projects and power plant expansion. Critics warned the township’s current proposal lacks safeguards like noise studies and decommissioning rules. Solicitor Beau Hoffman will now review public concerns and a suggested ordinance template before the issue returns for a future vote.
FORMER CONVENIENCE STORE CEO PASSES AT AGE 77
Steve Sheetz, the Altoona native credited with helping grow the Sheetz Corporation into a nationwide convenience store powerhouse, has died at the age of 77. The Altoona Mirror reports that Sheetz passed away Sunday evening at UPMC Altoona following respiratory complications. He served as president and CEO beginning in 1984 and later as chairman, guiding the company to more than 800 stores across seven states. Sheetz was also widely known for his philanthropic work, including major donations to Penn State Altoona. Funeral arrangements are pending.
PA’S 250 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION PLANS FOR 2026
As the nation prepares for America’s 250th anniversary, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission has launched a year-long statewide initiative highlighting Pennsylvania’s role in shaping the country. Called “Pennsylvania 250: The Keystone of American History”, the effort includes major exhibits, public programs, and historic site events across the Commonwealth.
