NORRY COUNTY JAIL CONSIDERING HOUSING ICE DETAINEES
Officials in Sunbury say the Northumberland County Jail is in preliminary talks with federal officials about possibly housing ICE detainees. According to the Daily Item, Warden Brian Wheary told the prison board the jail was approached about detainees at a rate that could exceed 150 dollars per day. The jail currently houses 246 inmates, with capacity for about 300, and county leaders stressed no decisions have been made as they gather more information on costs, regulations, and impacts.
FUNDS GIVEN TO WILLIAMSPORT FOR INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENT
PennDOT has awarded the Williamsport nearly 406-thousand dollars to improve safety at a busy city intersection. The Multimodal Transportation Fund grant will modernize the traffic signal at High and Campbell streets, aiming to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. State Representative Jamie Flick and Mayor Derek Slaughter both say the upgrade will benefit drivers, walkers, and nearby businesses.
NEW STRATEGY FOR COMBATING ELDER ABUSE
Pennsylvania is launching a new approach to address rising elder abuse cases as the senior population grows. The Department of Aging announced more than ten million dollars to support multidisciplinary teams that bring together social services, law enforcement, and health care providers. The pilot program includes Indiana County where elder abuse cases have risen by 50 percent and a northern region made up of Clearfield, Jefferson, Potter, Cameron, Elk, and McKean counties, where officials say closer collaboration is critical to protecting vulnerable older adults.
WASD TEAM CHOSEN FOR CHARITY BASKETBALL GAME
Sixteen local teachers, students, and staff have been chosen to take on the Harlem Wizards in the upcoming charity basketball game at Williamsport Area High School. According to the Sun Gazette, the team is coached by middle school principal Kirk Felix and includes WAHS seniors Kye Diakite and Parker Fox, Curtin Intermediate assistant principal Jacob Anderson, and teachers Nicole Pish and Jamie Bower. Proceeds for next Thursday’s event benefit the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation.
MAN VIOLATED CONDITIONS WHILE AWAITING TRIAL, REMAINS JAILED
A Middleburg man will remain jailed after a judge denied his request for bail while he awaits trial on strangulation charges. According to the Daily Item, Will W. Brunson, 39, had been released on bail in August but was jailed again after police say he violated conditions by going to the alleged victim’s home while she and her child were present. During a hearing this week, Brunson admitted drug and alcohol abuse and asked to be released, but prosecutors argued the victim would not be safe. President Judge Lori Hackenberg agreed, citing serious safety concerns, with jury selection set for later this month.
NEW COO FOR RVR YMCA
The River Valley Regional YMCA has announced the promotion of Cori Amrom to Chief Operating Officer, effective the first of the year. Cori brings more than 13 years of leadership experience with the Y, most recently overseeing advancement, child care expansion, fundraising, and community partnerships. As COO, she’ll now manage daily operations and branch leadership across all six YMCA locations, continuing the organization’s mission of strengthening communities across the region.
WILLIAMSPORT MAN CAMPS OUT FOR HOMELESS VETERANS AWARENESS
A Williamsport man is spending three days living outdoors again this year to raise awareness of homeless veterans. Paul Mills, a member of Sons of the American Legion Squadron One, will be camped outside Garrett Cochran American Legion Post One on East Market Street tonight through Sunday. The public is invited to stop by, talk with Paul, enjoy a hot dog or toasted marshmallow, and make a donation benefiting the Homeless Veterans Awareness Program.
CLINTON COUNTY WINNERS HEAD TO FARM SHOW COMPETITION
Several Blue Ribbon winners from the 2025 Clinton County Fair are competing at the Pennsylvania Farm Show this weekend. Brenda Smith of Lock Haven will enter her apple pie, Finn Kremser will compete with cookies, brownies and bars, Michelle Condo of Bellefonte will present her homemade chocolate cake, and Nikki Bechdel of Mackeyville will vie for a title with her angel food cake.
