MUNICIPALITIES WORK TO SHELTER THOSE OUT IN THE COLD WEATHER As dangerous cold and snow move into the region, leaders in Williamsport and surrounding communities are working to keep people without housing safe and warm. Code Blue shelters in the Williamsport area are open overnight, offering a hot meal, a warm place to sleep, and support services as temperatures plunge. In Sunbury, Haven Ministry is already full and has a waiting list of about 60 people, while county officials are extending senior center hours and exploring temporary overnight shelters. Officials say resources are stretched, but efforts are underway across the Valley to prevent anyone from being left out in the cold.
MUNCY CREEK HOME VALUES COULD DROP WITH PROPOSED FARM IN PLACE
More than a thousand homeowners in Muncy Creek Township could see significant drops in property values if a proposed large chicken farm moves forward, according to testimony at a conditional use hearing this week. According to the Sun Gazette, real estate appraiser John Kilpatrick told township supervisors that odor, flies, truck traffic and other nuisances from the operation could reduce nearby home values by up to 25 percent. Kilpatrick said the project is too close to residential areas and could also lead to major losses in local tax revenue.
