ROUTE 61 SHUT DOWN FROM NEAR HEAD-ON ACCIDENT
A near head-on crash tied up traffic along Route 61 in Coal Township for about an hour Tuesday evening. Police say a white Lexus swerved into the northbound lane near Pool World around 6:40 and struck a black Chevrolet Suburban. Both vehicles were disabled and towed. The driver of the Chevrolet suffered a head injury and was taken to a Geisinger hospital. Shamokin Police Department say the crash remains under investigation.
WOMAN HIT IN MUNCY PARKING LOT, SUSPECT FLEES
A South Williamsport man is accused of fleeing after a pedestrian was struck in a Muncy parking lot over the weekend. Pennsylvania State Police say the hit-and-run happened around 3 Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Ulta Beauty, where a 26-year-old woman was hit and suffered minor injuries. Troopers later identified the driver as 85-year-old Richard Staas of South Williamsport. No charges have been filed at this time.
SNOW REMOVAL IN NORTHUMBERLAND THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
Northumberland borough officials say temporary parking restrictions will be in place Thursday and Friday to allow crews to remove snow. All vehicles must be moved from designated streets between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., including parts of Queen, Priestley, Water, Front, Orange, King, Third, Fourth, Seventh and Duke Street Extension. Officials warn cars left in restricted areas could be fined or towed at the owner’s expense.
MANSFIELD HOSTING 3RD ANNUAL PIANO FESTIVAL
Mansfield University is inviting young musicians to take part in its third annual Piano Festival, celebrating piano performance and music education. The event is open to pianists of all ages from Pennsylvania and neighboring states, with options to perform in festival recitals or compete in scholarship auditions. Organizers say high school juniors and seniors can also vie for five thousand dollars in piano scholarships. Registration is fifteen dollars and closes February fifteenth.
LATE NIGHT SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT FIRE
Fire crews from several departments responded to a house fire in South Williamsport late Tuesday night. The call came in just before eleven to the 2300 block of Bedardo Drive, with early reports of possible entrapment. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm about fifteen minutes later. No other details have been released as the investigation continues.
NEW HIRES IN MUNCY BOROUGH
Muncy Borough Council filled a vacant seat, hired a new police officer, and approved several initiatives at its regular meeting. Ed Feigles was appointed to council after Chris Holmes failed to file paperwork to accept the seat he won in November, with borough officials declaring the position vacant under borough code. Council also voted to hire Keifer Bathgate as a full-time police officer starting January 25, and approved a joint resolution with Downtown Muncy, Inc. to begin a revitalization plan for a historic industrial area of town.
FETTERMAN WANTS ICE OUT OF MN, WILL STILL VOTE TO FUND THEM
U.S. Senator John Fetterman says Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minneapolis should end immediately, calling the clashes with protesters dangerous and ungovernable. However, Fetterman says he would still support funding ICE to avoid a federal government shutdown. According to the Pittsburgh post gazette, his comments drawing criticism from fellow Democrats after two Americans were killed during enforcement actions in Minneapolis.
MAKE PLANS NOW FOR A SOBER SUPERBOWL
Local police are urging fans to plan ahead and drive sober for Super Bowl LX on Sunday, February 8. Officers with the Mahoning Township Police Department and the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program say safe planning starts before kickoff, with partygoers urged to line up a designated driver or a sober ride. The message is part of the nationwide “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
