FIRE DISPLACES LOYALSOCK TOWNSHIP WOMAN
A Loyalsock Township woman is homeless after a fast-moving fire destroyed her home on Starr Road. Fire Chief Shawn Bastian says flames were reported around 6:20 p.m. Thursday night, and within 30 minutes much of the two-story house had collapsed into burning rubble. The woman escaped with help from neighbors and rescued one dog, but at least two others are believed to have perished. According to the Sun Gazette, Multiple volunteer fire companies responded to the two-alarm blaze. The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner, and a state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT MAN ARRESTED OVER PUNCHING OFFICER
A 37-year-old South Williamsport man is jailed after allegedly punching a police officer during a welfare check early February 21st. Officers were called to 409 Curtin Street around 12:30 a.m. after Alan D. Larson reportedly made statements about wanting to harm himself. Police say Larson appeared highly intoxicated and became increasingly agitated as officers tried for more than an hour to have him evaluated by paramedics. Authorities allege he warned an officer he was going to punch him, then followed through. Two officers suffered minor injuries. Larson is charged with aggravated assault and related offenses and is being held on 25 thousand dollars bail.
GOP CONGRESSMAN TO RUN A TENTH TIME
Incumbent Republican Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson is running for a 10th term in Washington. Glenn Thompson, 66, represents Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District, the largest in the state geographically, and has served in Congress since 2009. In a campaign video, Thompson called serving in the House the honor of a lifetime and pointed to work supporting veterans, farmers and career education. A senior member of the House Agriculture Committee, Thompson recently saw his Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act signed into law. Democrat Ray Bilger has announced a challenge.
CROSSCUTTERS WILL BRING BACK PREVIOUS MANAGER FOR THE SEASON
The Williamsport Crosscutters have announced that Kenny Thomas will return as manager for the 2026 season. Williamsport Crosscutters says Thomas, who led the club to a 31-43 record last year, is eager to build on that momentum as the team celebrates the 100th anniversary of Historic Bowman Field. Thomas brings 34 seasons of college head coaching experience and more than 1,200 career wins. The 2026 season opens June 2 with a record 41 home games. Opening Night and single-game tickets go on sale May 1.
STUDENTS EVACUATED OVER SMOKE REPORTED IN THE SCHOOL
Students at Central Mountain High School were dismissed early Thursday after smoke was reported in the Career and Technical Center. Fire crews responded around 10 a.m., where officials say a hot ember sparked smoldering in the agricultural mechanics classroom ventilation system. Staff evacuated the building, and two instructors trained in fire safety helped contain the issue until crews arrived. No injuries were reported. Classes are expected to resume today.
MAN RAGES AFTER TAKING METAMPHETAMINE
A 46-year-old man from Jersey Shore is jailed after what police say was a drug-fueled rampage Wednesday morning. Lycoming Regional Police Department responded to Calvert Street around 9:30 a.m. and allege Samuel Henry Collins, under the influence of methamphetamine, jumped a fence into a backyard and accused a family of assaulting girls before punching a 27-year-old man. Police say Collins then ran down an alley, threatened to stab another man and was restrained until officers arrived. Collins faces multiple charges and is being held on $25,000 bail.
NEW SHAMOKIN LANDLORD/TENANT ORDINANCE APPROVED
Shamokin City Council voted unanimously at a special meeting to amend its landlord-tenant ordinance, eliminating escalating fines that previously started at $100 and instead setting penalties at $500 per offense, with each day of a violation considered a separate offense. Mayor Mike McLaughlin said the section also referenced an outdated ordinance. During the meeting, council also approved a request to close the eastbound lane of Independence Street on March 17 for a St. Patrick’s Day event.

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra is bringing the music of your favorite video games to the concert stage. “Video Games in Concert” takes place March 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Journey Bank Community Arts Center.
