MAN CRASHES INTO HOME, FLEES THE SCENE
An 18-year-old Montoursville man is in jail after police say he crashed into a house and then tried to flee. Troopers say Wyatt Johnston struck a home on Warrensville Road around 3:15 Tuesday morning and drove off. State Police say they later spotted the damaged Jeep in Montoursville, but Johnston allegedly sped away, made a U-turn, and crashed into a fence. After failing field sobriety tests, police say he tried to run but was quickly caught. Johnston now faces multiple charges including DUI and felony fleeing, and is being held on 25-thousand dollars bail.
MAN SLEEPING AT AN INTERSECTION ARRESTED
A Lycoming County man faces multiple drug and DUI charges after state police say he was found asleep behind the wheel at an intersection in Muncy Creek Township. Troopers say 47-year-old Christopher Oettel was discovered in his SUV around 5:30 p.m. February fifth and showed signs of impairment when awakened. During a search of the vehicle, police say they found five bags of suspected fentanyl and more than 180 assorted pills. Oettel allegedly admitted using methamphetamine in recent days. He has waived his preliminary hearing and remains free on 35-thousand dollars bail.
CITY WORKING OUT PAYBACK TO RVTA
Williamsport City Council has approved an agreement outlining money owed to the River Valley Transit Authority. Under the deal, the city owes the authority about 1-point-6 million dollars for past expenses that RVTA paid but were later reimbursed to the city. Officials say the money had been allocated for capital projects but was never used. According to the Sun Gazette, the agreement is part of the final steps separating the city from the transit authority. The resolution now heads to Mayor Derek Slaughter for approval.
PUBLIC INVITED TO LEARN TO FLY FISH
The Susquehanna Chapter of Trout Unlimited is inviting the public to learn how to get started fly fishing in northcentral Pennsylvania. A special program will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Covenant Central Presbyterian Church on West Fourth Street in Williamsport. MAN ARRESTED AFTER DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE
A Lewis Township man is facing assault charges after a domestic disturbance late last month. State police say troopers found the female victim covered in mud with thorns in her clothing after she ran through the woods to escape Robert Diton Brown during an argument at a home on Lycoming Creek Road. The woman told police she feared he would hurt her. Brown, 37, is charged with simple assault, criminal mischief and harassment and has been released on 25-thousand dollars bail.
MAN ASKS FOR RIDE AT BARRACKS, IS CHARGED ON OUTSTANDING WARRANT
A man wanted in Indiana for allegedly beating a pregnant woman was arrested after walking into the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Laporte and asking for help. Troopers say 32-year-old Daniel Gross told them he was homeless and asked for a ride to a shelter. When troopers checked his information, they discovered an outstanding warrant and a violent criminal history. During a search of his backpack, police say they found a disassembled 9-millimeter handgun and ammunition. Gross now faces firearm charges and is being held in Wyoming County Prison on 20-thousand dollars bail.
ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION LINE CONSTRUCTION TO START
PPL Electric Utilities is planning a major transmission line rebuild between Buckhorn and Frackville to modernize the electric grid and improve reliability. The project will replace aging steel lattice towers with new steel monopoles along an existing 230-kilovolt line through parts of Schuylkill and Columbia counties. Staging is underway near Catawissa, and construction is expected to begin this summer and take about two years to complete.
RIVER BOAT PROGRESS FOR NORTHUMBERLAND
A long-planned riverboat project in the Central Susquehanna Valley is moving forward. The Central Susquehanna Riverboat Society says the vessel’s hull is now being built in Leesburg, New Jersey and will later be transported to Northumberland for final construction. According to North Cetnral PA dot com, once finished, the 74-foot riverboat will carry about 110 passengers for sightseeing cruises, educational trips, and special events along the Susquehanna River. Organizers say the boat will also be part of a regional riverboat trail linking communities from Williamsport to Harrisburg. The group is now raising additional funds during the Raise the Region campaign.
