FEDERAL CHARGES FOR ATTEMPTED SMUGGLING OF CONTRABAND
Two people are facing federal charges for allegedly plotting to smuggle contraband into a central Pennsylvania prison using a drone. Prosecutors say Bryan Petry and Tiffany Walsh brought a drone and supplies to the U.S. Penitentiary in Allenwood in January. Authorities say they planned to drop items like cellphones, tobacco, drugs and syringes into the prison to make money. Investigators found the equipment inside their vehicle. The pair now faces multiple federal charges, including conspiracy and attempting to provide contraband to inmates.
WOMAN CHARGED WITH THEFT AS HOME HEALTH WORKER
A former Lycoming County caregiver is facing dozens of charges after police say she stole thousands from an elderly man in her care. Investigators say 63-year-old Maire Lorimer of Millersburg forged 27 checks while caring for the man in Muncy Township, taking nearly 56-thousand dollars. Police say she claimed she won lottery money, but allege some of the stolen funds were used for personal purchases, including a ring. Lorimer now faces about 80 charges, including forgery and theft, and remains free on 25-thousand dollars bail.
EMISSIONS TESTING COULD BE OVER IN LYCOMING COUNTY
A bill that could impact drivers in Lycoming County is moving forward in Harrisburg. The Senate Transportation Committee has approved legislation that would remove Lycoming and several other counties from Pennsylvania’s vehicle emissions program. The proposal would also exempt vehicles five years old or newer from testing. Supporters say the change would save drivers money and eliminate an outdated requirement, pointing to studies showing minimal impact on air quality. The measure now heads to the full Senate for consideration.
CITY COUNCIL TO FILL VACANCY DURING PUBLIC MEETING
Williamsport City Council will hold a special meeting to fill a vacancy left by the late Bonnie Katz. Council President Eric Beiter says the meeting will be open to the public and will include interviews before an appointment is made. Applications are now closed, and officials say details will be posted on the city’s website and advertised publicly.
COPPER WIRE THEFT IN WHITE DEER TOWNSHIP
State police are investigating a copper wire theft in Union County. Troopers say the incident happened around 1 a.m. April 14 along Old Route 15 in White Deer Township near New Columbia. About 24 bundles of copper wire, valued at around five-thousand dollars, were stolen from a business, and a lock was also damaged. Police say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with information to contact state police in Milton.
SHORT STAFFED LYCO PRISON SEEKING NEW OFFICERS
The Lycoming County Prison is facing a staffing shortage as inmate numbers continue to rise. Warden Brad Shoemaker says the facility is more than ten corrections officers short and struggling to attract applicants. According to the Sun Gazette, he says advertising challenges and missed interviews have made hiring difficult, though some applications are coming in. The prison’s average population has climbed to around 300 inmates, up significantly from last year. Officials expect those numbers to remain steady or increase as court cases move forward, adding more pressure on already limited staff.
ENGINEERING FIRM HIRED TO DESIGN OLD CITY WILLIAMSPORT
A major step forward in downtown Williamsport’s Old City revitalization is underway. City Council has hired a York-based engineering firm for a 2-point-6 million dollar design and engineering contract. According to the Sun gazette, the project focuses on the historic Old City area east of Market Street and includes street light upgrades, utility improvements, and a new connection to the Susquehanna Riverwalk. Officials say the work is part of a partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and could take about seven months to complete, helping boost future economic development near Lycoming College.
STATE POLCIE HOSTING SPRINGTIME CHILD SEAT CLINICS
Pennsylvania State Police are offering free child safety seat checks across Lycoming County this month. Troopers say the goal is to improve safety and ensure car seats are properly installed. Several events are scheduled, including May 13 and May 17 at the Montoursville Fire Department, May 28 at the Lycoming County Building in Williamsport, May 29 in Jersey Shore, and May 31 in Muncy. Each check takes about 30 minutes. Parents are asked to bring their child seat, vehicle manual, and instructions. Officials say proper installation can significantly reduce the risk of injury in a crash.
