MAN ARRESTED AFTER CHASE AND FLEEING FROM POLICE ON FOOT
A Montgomery man is facing charges after a dangerous police chase in Lycoming County. Police say 30-year-old Dalton Rishel fled officers at a high rate of speed on Angletown Road in Muncy Creek Township April 15. During the pursuit, he nearly struck two motorcyclists, forcing one rider to lay the bike down to avoid a crash. Officers say Rishel was driving with a suspended license due to a prior DUI. He eventually stopped, ran from the vehicle and was later captured. Rishel is charged with felony fleeing police and remains jailed on 85-thousand dollars bail.
COUPLE CHARGED WITH CHILD ENDANGERMENT
A Union County couple is facing charges after police say drugs and materials used to make meth were found in their Lewisburg apartment. Officers were called during a Children and Youth visit and reported seeing suspected meth-making items in plain view. A search later uncovered meth, psilocybin, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. The couple is charged with child endangerment and multiple drug offenses. Bail was set at five-thousand dollars each, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 28.
SUIT FILED OVER POTENTIAL DEMOLITION OF BUSH HOUSE
A legal battle continues to unfold over the future of the historic Bush House Estate in Lycoming County. FAMVEST Acquisitions has filed a motion to dismiss an effort by Alvico Limited to stop the home from being demolished at the former Lycoming Mall site. According to the SUN Gazette, developers say the property could make way for future projects, including a convenience store and hotel. Alvico argues a prior agreement should prevent demolition, but attorneys for the developer say no such restriction exists in the final deed. The case now heads through the court system as both sides dispute the property’s future.
LOCAL ARBOR DAY CELEBRATIONS THIS WEEKEND
Arbor Day celebrations are taking root in Lycoming County this weekend. The City of Williamsport kicks things off Friday at noon in Brandon Park with a ceremony at the bandshell, featuring performances by St. John Neumann Regional Academy and the dedication of nine trees and two benches. Then on Saturday, Downtown Muncy hosts its Arbor Day event at Waldron Park from 10 to 2, with tree planting, family activities, and educational programs. Organizers say the events highlight the importance of trees while bringing the community together.
DRUG TRIAL ENDS IN HUNG JURY, CASE DISMISSED
A Lycoming County drug trial has ended in a mistrial after jurors could not reach a unanimous decision. Prosecutors say Jeff Allen Stahl admitted on video to acting as a middleman in a fentanyl sale during a traffic stop in Williamsport. Detectives recovered eight baggies of fentanyl during the search. Despite that evidence, the jury was split 11 to 1 in favor of guilt. Defense attorneys argued there was no proof of an actual drug sale, noting no money was found and the alleged buyer was never charged. A judge declared a mistrial late Monday, and it’s unclear if the case will be retried.
BAIL REMAINS HIGH FOR SELISGROVE SHOOTER
A Snyder County man accused of a shooting is being held on high bail after a tense court hearing. Police say 33-year-old Joshua Barnhart fired several shots at a Selinsgrove home April 1 after threatening family members. The victim, Cynthia Bogetti, told a judge she fears for her life and wants him kept behind bars. Investigators say children were in the vehicle when Barnhart arrived with a gun. He now faces attempted homicide and other charges. A judge denied a request to lower bail, keeping it set at 200-thousand dollars.
SHIKELLAMY SCHOOLS GETTING FUNDING FOR STUDENT PROGRAMS
The Shikellamy School District is getting more than 456-thousand dollars in state funding to expand student programs. The money will support a four-week summer program for younger students and a 30-week after-school program for middle schoolers. Officials say the programs will include tutoring, STEAM activities, meals, and transportation. The funding comes through the state’s BOOST initiative, aimed at supporting at-risk youth and reducing community violence
VOUCHERS COMING FOR SPRING CLEAN UP IN SUNBURY
Sunbury residents can soon pick up vouchers for the city’s annual spring cleanup event. Starting May 1, vouchers will be available at City Hall and the Sunbury Municipal Authority with proof of residency. Officials say the vouchers are required to drop off unwanted items at the transfer station throughout the month of May, Tuesdays through Fridays. The updated program replaces the old three-day cleanup, giving residents more flexibility. City leaders say the change is aimed at improving access while also helping reduce illegal dumping in the community.
