MUNCY TWP SUPERVISOR NOW HELD IN COMTEMPT
A Lycoming County judge has held Muncy Township Supervisor Chair Terri Lauchle in contempt after she again refused to sign documents tied to the proposed Bass Pro development at the former Lycoming Mall site. According to the Sun Gazette, President Judge Eric Linhardt ordered Lauchle to pay 500 dollars a day until she signs the land consolidation plans requested by developer FAMvest. Township Vice-Chair Denise Artley signed the documents during Thursday’s hearing. Developers and business leaders say Bass Pro remains committed to the project despite ongoing delays.
MOUNT CARMEL ENTERS AGREEMENT WITH ICE
Mount Carmel Borough Council has approved an agreement allowing its police department to work with ICE under the federal 287(g) task force program. Police Chief Tom Hornung says officers would receive training and only assist with immigration enforcement during routine police duties, not actively seek out detainees. Two council members voted against the agreement over financial concerns. Council also hired Patrolman Jason Masser as a full-time officer, keeping the department staffed at eight officers.
PUC ENCOURAGING ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS TO SHOP AROUND
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is warning consumers to prepare for potentially higher electric bills this summer. Beginning June 1st, many utilities across the state will raise their “price to compare” rates for customers who do not use a competitive supplier. Officials say hotter temperatures and increased air conditioning use could drive bills even higher during heat waves. The PUC is encouraging customers to explore payment plans, assistance programs and energy-saving options before summer demand increases.
ROUTE 6 ALLIANCE HOLDING EVENT THIS FALL
The PA Route 6 Alliance is inviting communities and organizations across northern Pennsylvania to Coudersport this September for its 2026 educational workshop and annual meeting. The three-day event will feature tourism and economic development speakers, guided tours, bike rides and the annual “Do 6” Awards ceremony honoring projects along the Route 6 Heritage Corridor. Organizers say the event will focus on revitalization, planning and strengthening communities across the 11-county region.
MAN STILL FACING SENTENCING FOR INDECENT ASSAULT
A Lycoming County jury has convicted a South Williamsport man of indecent assault involving an 11-year-old girl. Prosecutors say video shown in court captured 27-year-old Robert Briggs touching the sleeping child, with investigators identifying him through a distinctive tattoo visible in the footage. Briggs was found guilty of indecent assault of a child and indecent assault of an unconscious person, but jurors did not convict him on the more serious charge of recording a sex act involving a minor. He remains jailed pending sentencing in August.
WOMAN FOUND IN DANVILLE POND IDENTIFIED
State police say the death of a Montour County woman found in a pond near Danville has been ruled accidental. Troopers were called Saturday morning to Roberts Lane, where 73-year-old Darlene Swope was discovered floating in a pond between Danville Suites and Interstate 80. Investigators believe she had been in the water for several days. Police say no injuries were found and the death is not considered suspicious. Authorities have since contacted a family member after earlier asking the public for help.
NEW MOBILE COMMAND CENTER DAMAGED
Snyder County officials say a 155-thousand-dollar emergency mobile command center has suffered major water damage before ever being used. Commissioners say condensation inside the custom-built 46-foot vehicle ruined electrical components after the unit sat unused for months. Repairs are expected to cost more than 34-thousand dollars. County leaders plan to discuss the issue during a special meeting Tuesday. The mobile command center was purchased with donated funds and was intended to serve as a regional emergency dispatch and response unit.
BROADBAND EXPANSION WILL MOVE FORWARD IN RURAL PA
Pennsylvania can now move forward with more than 700 million dollars in broadband expansion funding after federal officials dropped a dispute tied to state labor rules. The money will help connect roughly 130-thousand homes and businesses, many in rural areas, with high-speed internet service. State officials say companies receiving the grants now have six months to sign contracts and four years to complete the work.
