PENNDOT VEHICLE AND TRACTOR TRAILER CRASH

Yesterday morning, a crash-impact vehicle on the back of a state Department of Transportation dump truck proved its worth when a tractor trailer truck slammed into it in the northbound lane of Route 15 at the Beautys Run Road interchange. Both the driver of the tractor trailer and the PennDot employee sitting in the stopped vehicle escaped serious injuries in the 9 a.m. crash. The PennDot vehicle was protecting a group of workers who were cleaning bridges less than 1,000 feet ahead of the truck. Why the driver of the tractor trailer failed to move over to the passing lane was unknown and State police who were leading the investigation have not released any details.

WILLIAMSPORT POLICE OFFICER FIRED

Yesterday, a city police corporal was fired by Williamsport City Council for alleged, but undisclosed acts of insubordination and rule breaking he was said to have committed over a period of five months. Eric Houseknect allegedly committed 27 infractions in that time, two of which four members of the coulcil who held a hearing on June 26th termed as serious. Houseknecht continued to receive his salary for eight months while he was suspended. The exact nature of the incidents were not disclosed by council or police and Mayor Gabriel Campana said the incidents were handled as a personnel issue and he could not discuss their nature.

 

AIRPORT TERMINAL ON SCHEDULE

One year after receiving the go-ahead to get started, the new Williamsport Airport terminal building is on track to open on October 1st of this year. While there have been multiple change orders over the months, some adding thousands of dollars to the cost, airport executive director Thomas Hart says the project is still on budget. There will be three parking lots available, including the current long-term parking area complete with attendant and a new metered parking island with about 20 spaces.

 

GRAFIUS RUN SURVEY TO COMMENCE

If you’re are a Williamsport City resident living near Grafius Run, you may soon hear a knock on your door or find a survey left near it. City officials and a city consulting firm will be asking residents for a damage assessment of flooding cause directly by Grafius Run. The surveyors will begin to canvass homes in earnest starting Monday, according to Jason Fitzgerald, president of Penn Strategies, the city’s consulting firm. The survey won’t ask for anything other than a name and address and damage or loss estimates.

 

CLINTON COUNTY ROAD WORK ANNOUNCED

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Clinton County has announced the work schedule for July 23rd through the 27th, weather permitting. Motorist should travel with extra caution in these and all work areas. Motorist should be aware that due to the nature of highway maintenance and emergency work, crews could be working on any highway at any time of day or night. The work will include sign repairs, guiderail repairs and work is expected to be completed, weather permitting on the Lick Run Bridge, Island Bridge and repairs at Baker’s Mill Run.

 

WILLIAMSPORT POLICE TAKE TO TWO WHEELS

The next time you see someone riding a bike in Williamsport, It might be a police officer riding it. Police began patrolling on bikes this month. Patrolman Damon Cole says that you can sneak up on people who don’t expect to see a policeman on a bike and that could help police see more drug issues. The Williamsport Bureau of Police also hopes the move to two wheels will help officers get to know the people in their community better.

 

PENN STATE LOOKS TO FREEZE TUITION

Penn State’s board is looking at a proposal to freeze in-state resident undergraduate tuition at current levels. Yesterday, the board’s finance committee endorsed the proposal at a meeting in Reading. Out-of-state Penn Staters will likely see an increase just over 3.5 percent. In-state freshmen and sophomores currently pay about $17,000 per year, while for out-of-states pay more than $32,000. The school is also working to reduce the cost to students by lowering the length of time it takes to get a degree.

 

LYCOMING COUNTY FAIR PREPARES TO WRAP UP

Tonight at the 148th Annual Lycoming County Fair, It’s the Dale Wheeland Memorial Tractor Pull at 6 pm and tomorrow, as the fair wraps up, th Gas & Diesel 4×4 Truck Pull gets under way at 4 pm. WILQ will be broadcasting from the Super Roving Radio on the midway tonight and tomorrow from 5 until 9 pm.
