The 12th Annual “Williamsport Welcomes the World” event took place in downtown Williamsport, on Friday night. The last major event of the Little League World Series, outside of the actual games itself; was well attended. One of the features of the gala event showcasing the retail landscape in downtown, was the appearance of former Major League All Star Rickey Henderson. Henderson is the all time leader in Stolen Bases and Runs Scored. It was the first time the event was held since 2019, due to Covid 19 restrictions.

A 16 year old teen was charged as an adult, for the recent shooting last week on West Edwin Street, in which he exchanged gunfire with a man who was walking on the sidewalk. Shamier Gadson, was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possessing instruments of crime, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person. The incident occurred on August 19th. Gadson was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and was later arrested and placed in the Lycoming County Prison, after being arraigned in the Court of Common Pleas, with bail set at $500,000.

The Lycoming County Commissioners approved the hiring of eleven correctional officers at the county prison and pre-release center. The county prison had been experiencing a staffing shortage, since earlier in the year. The commissioners had previously had tabled many of the hirings, from July’s session. But, were approved with other personnel decisions in their August meeting, this week.

A 13 year old boy is recovering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound from an incident on Tuesday evening. Williamsport Bureau of Police are still investigating the incident, and are trying to determine who owns the gun and how the teen ended up with the gun. The teen sustained the injury in the leg, inside a home in the 300 block of Louisa Street, around 7:40pm.

A Loyalsock Township man is jailed in the Lycoming County Prison, in lieu of bail after an incident at his home on Four Mile Drive, on Tuesday in which he allegedly struck his wife, after claiming that she wasn’t keeping the home clean enough. Bryan Poust, was charged with Simple Assault and Harassment, with bail set at $15,000, by District Magistrate Christian Frey.

Medical malpractice lawsuits could be on the rise, after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court reversed a twenty year old rule, that malpractice suits can be filed in the county in which the injustice occurred. The reversal by the state’s high court, could mean an increase in cases in the state’s largest cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh; where juries could be more sympathetic on awarding large amounts of compensation to victims.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a shooting incident near the Liberty Exxon, in Tioga County. The incident happened around 3pm on Friday afternoon. An online media outlet reports that the incident is an active investigation and that the convenience store is currently closed. A Berwick man is charged with assault, after hitting a 9 year old boy, who allegedly was throwing rocks into the man’s yard. Byron Terry will appear in district court on September 19th, after police discovered that Terry left welt marks on the boy, on Fairview Avenue in Berwick. The incident occurred on August 18th, around 8pm, according to NorthcentralPA.com.

IN SPORTS —

Little League World Series…

It will be Honolulu, Hawaii and Nolensville, Tennessee vying for the U.S. Championship at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport, later today at 3:30pm in Lamade Stadium. It will be a rematch of a previous contest on Wednesday, in which Hawaii won 13-0. Meanwhile, Curacao and Chinese Taipei, will battle for the International Championship, at 12:30pm in Lamade Stadium. The winners of those two games will play Sunday, for the World Championship.

High School Football…

The high school football season got underway in earnest throughout the Susquehanna Valley on Friday night. Some games were delayed due to lightning issues; but, were able to complete their contests. The Backyard Broadcasting Game of the Week, featured the Green Hornets of Wellsboro and the Warriors of Montoursville. Wellsboro controlled the first half of the game; but, Montoursville fought back in the second half, not giving up any score to the Green Hornets. Montoursville won the game, 21-14.

MLB Draft League…

The Williamsport Crosscutters dropped their contest on Friday night to the State College Spikes, 8 to 4. The two teams will play tonight at 6:35pm, in State College. The Cutters will then take on the Trenton Thunder beginning on Tuesday night, at Historic Bowman Field.
