SETTLEMENT REACHED FOR LITTLE LEAGUE AND PLAYER
The lawsuit between the family of the boy who fell from a bunk bed during the Little League World series in August of 2022 and Little League has been settled. According to the Sun Gazette, the case was previously filed by parents, Nancy and Jace Oliverson from Santa Clara, Utah for their son, Easton, who suffered a traumatic brain injury. Jury selection in the case was set for February 27th in Philadelphia, but attorney’s for Little League announced the settlement of the case, but the terms are confidential. Savoy Contract Furniture denied any liability. Easton and has since recovered and cannot play contact sports but is back to playing baseball.
MAN ASSAULTS, ALLEGEDLY OVER A SMIRK
A Philadelphia man is in custody after he allegedly assaulted a person he thought was smirking at him in Muncy. According to North Central PA dot com, Shawn Marrandino was walking a dog January 31st and approached the victim who was inside an apartment at Heatherbrook Estates who he said was making a face at him and punched him 10 to 12 times in the face. Police say the victim tried to block the blows but didn’t strike back. Marrandino is being charged with simple assault and harassment with o bail is listed and a preliminary hearing on March 14.
BODY CAMERA GIFT FOR LOCAL POLICE
The Montour County Sheriff’s Office has been gifted body cameras. According to WNEP, the Mahoning Township Police Department donated eight body cameras and in-car cameras after receiving a grant to upgrade their equipment. They said the donation was approved by township supervisors. The equipment was free, but the sheriff’s office pays a $2,000 annual fee for the service. The body cameras should be fully in use within a month.
BENEFACTOR SOUGHT FOR CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY
Organizers of the John B. Hoy, Jr. Memorial Charity Golf Tournament in Mill Hall are looking for business interests who might consider becoming a benefactor for the fundraiser coming up this September. According to the Lock Haven Express, the annual tournament benefits a Clinton County non-profit or charitable organization and letters of interest are currently being accepted for the event. Over the past 24 years the tournament has raised over 274 thousand dollars for local charitable organizations. ONE INJURY IN TWO-VEHICLE CRASH
An accident closed Route 487, just east of Hillside Avenue Wednesday morning around 5am in Ralpho Township. According to the News Item, police say the woman in a Chevy Cruze collided with a tractor trailer. Once called to the scene, emergency crews extricated a female driver from passenger side of the wrecked vehicle after removing the doors from the car, and transported her to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. The driver of the tractor trailer did not sustain any injuries and was able to move the truck from the travel lanes to the nearby Sheetz. Ralpho Township Police are investigating the crash.
MAN ARRESTED FOR RENTING CAR WITH FAKE DOCUMENTS
Police arrested a Pennsylvania man after they stopped him with three passengers on I-80 in a rental car in Union County that they discovered was rented with fraudulent documents on January 24th. According to state police, they stopped Dequan Daniel Dewitt, of Sharon, for window tint and a loose license plate in West Buffalo Township and discovered the smell of marijuana. Dewitt gave troopers a false ID and others in the car gave fake names. After a search and police found multiple IDs and credit cards in the rental car, Dewitt was taken into custody and police say he admitted he used the fake ids to rent the car from a rental car company in Ohio. Dewitt was charged with identity theft, forgery, marijuana possession, and other traffic summaries. His preliminary hearing is March 11th.
POLICE FORCE APPROVED FOR SHAMOKIN
A resolution was adopted this week by the Shamokin Area Board of Directors that will start the process of forming a Shamokin Area School District police force. According to the News Item, Solicitor Frank Garrigan is now authorized to petition the Northumberland County Court of Common Pleas to appoint a current armed security guard at the elementary school, Jarrod Scandle, as the district police officer. Line Mountain, Shikellamy and Selinsgrove Area are among the local school districts that have their own police force.
PRELIMINARY COST ESTIMATES FOR CITY HALL PROPOSED
Cost estimates were presented this week to Williamsport City Council and the administration by the architects working on a plan for a refurbished Williamsport City Hall. According to the Sun Gazette, members from the BKV Group say a refurbished building could be designed and constructed for about $28 million with new construction for City Hall and the police department could be 60 million. The group proposed the estimates in a 120 page preliminary study and say they will e fine tuning it for a final report in less than two-months. To use City Hall, it must be made accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act to be reoccupied.
