COUNCIL STREAMLINES LERTA PROCESS
Williamsport is streamlining its Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance program, or LERTA, for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. According to the Sun Gazette, City Council recently simplified applications, eliminating the residential application fee and requiring forms be filed with building permits instead of at occupancy. LERTA phases in tax increases from property improvements over 10 years, with city officials projecting an additional $1.5 million to the residential tax base and $3.5 million to the commercial base. The county still offers only commercial LERTA after ending its residential program.
GAS MAIN CONSTRUCTION IN DANVILLE
Overnight lane restrictions started last night on Northumberland Street in Danville for a gas main replacement project. According to PennDOT the contractor will work between Continental Boulevard and just west of the railroad crossing, with lane shifts in place from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. Drivers should expect delays, slow down, and use caution in the work zone. Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to wrap up by the end of August.
WATER RESCUE TRAINING IN CLINTON COUNTY
Some fire departments in Clinton County are expanding their water rescue capabilities with new diving certifications. According to the Sun Gazette, Citizens Hose Company No. 5, Dunnstown Fire Company, and Avis Fire Company have added members who recently completed open water dive training, while others from Citizens Hose and Eastside Fire Rescue are still in the process. Once training wraps up, Citizens Hose will have about 15 certified divers. Officials say there’s a plan to form a county-wide dive task force to handle major water emergencies, from swift-water rescues to recovery operations.
DOMESTIC INCIDENT LEADS TO TWO ARRESTS
Two men face charges after a domestic dispute led to a sawed-off shotgun being fired Friday in West Buffalo Township, Union County. According to the Daily Item, State Police say 40-year-old Joseph Gill of Dalmatia fired one shot into the air after confronting 28-year-old Jordan Reigel of Mifflinburg, who allegedly slapped and punched his sister. No one was hurt, but Gill fled the scene, prompting a brief standoff and search before he was found in a hunting blind. Both men were arrested and arraigned with bail set at $20,000 for Gill and $7,500 for Reigel. Their preliminary hearings are set for August 19.
FOURTH SUSPECT ARRESTED OVER LOYALSOCK SHOOTING
A fourth suspect was arrested last week in connection with a March shooting in Williamsport’s Randall Circle neighborhood. According to the Sun Gazette, State police say 17-year-old Tykir Jihad Smith, a Williamsport Area High School senior, was taken into custody Thursday in downtown Williamsport. Police say he is a suspect accused of joining others in firing shots into an occupied Loyalsock Township home March 3, allegedly in retaliation for the killing of 15-year-old Ahmeen Palmer the night before. Smith is jailed on $75,000 bail. Previously charged in the case were 18 year old Jaysin Roselle Applewhite, and 16 year old Kharu Michael Rorie, along with another juvenile, all facing conspiracy and assault charges.
SOME TOWNSHIPS COULD RAISE TAXES FOR EMS AND FIRE SERVICE
Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a bill to let all second-class townships — rural or suburban municipalities with fewer than 300 residents per square mile — raise property taxes dedicated to fire and EMS services. Supporters want the option available statewide, saying it’s a “tool in the toolbox” to fight chronic underfunding and volunteer shortages. Volunteer firefighters have dropped from 360,000 in the 1970s to fewer than 37,000 today, and 49 EMS companies have shut down in just the past two years. The measure passed the House in May and awaits a Senate vote.
