POLICE SEARCH FOR A BURGLARY SUSPECT IN MILL HALL
State police in Clinton County are investigating an early-morning burglary at a restaurant in the 300 block of Hogan Boulevard in Mill Hall. Troopers say just after 5:30 Friday morning, a suspect pried open a side door, stole about two-thousand dollars from bank envelopes at the host stand, and another two-hundred-eighty dollars from a cash drawer. Surveillance video shows the suspect’s face covered and clothing obscured. Anyone with information is asked to contact PSP Lamar at 570-726-6000.
FEDERAL CHARGES FORMEN WHO BROKE INTO GUN STORE
Two men are facing federal charges after investigators say they broke into a Williamsport gun shop and stole firearms. Authorities allege Tahir Abdul Dixon and Shamier James Gadson smashed a window at the National Range and Armory with a cinderblock, then fled in a stolen car. Police recovered two rifles after a short chase and crash. Both men are charged with conspiracy, theft from a federal firearms licensee, and possession of stolen firearms.
NEW LEGISLATION COULD HELP CONVICTED VETERANS
A bill that would allow Pennsylvania veterans convicted of crimes to seek post-conviction sentencing relief based on service-related mental health diagnoses has narrowly advanced in the state House. The measure, sponsored by Representative Carol Hill-Evans of York County, passed on a 102 to 101 vote and would let veterans present conditions like PTSD or traumatic brain injury after conviction. Supporters say it offers fairness for veterans, while opponents warn it could have unintended legal consequences.
SUNBURY POLICE TO OFFER 24/7 ADDICTION COUNSELING AT KIOSK
Sunbury police have launched a new effort to help residents struggling with addiction by placing a live support kiosk inside the department’s lobby on Arch Street. The kiosk connects users with addiction and recovery specialists through a face-to-face video call, available around the clock. Police say the goal is to provide a safe, judgment-free place for people to seek help without fear of arrest.
COURT UPHOLDS SENTENCE OF CONVICTED RAPIST
Convicted serial rapist John Kurtz will remain behind bars for the rest of his life after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied the Shamokin man’s appeal. Kurtz, a former state prison guard, was convicted on 43 counts tied to multiple kidnappings and rapes across Northumberland, Montour, and Columbia counties and is serving a sentence of 59 to 270 years. Prosecutors say the ruling brings long-awaited finality and justice for the victims, upholding the jury’s verdict and the investigative work that led to Kurtz’s conviction.
LITTLE LEAGUE BRING ON NEW DEPUTY GENERAL COUNSEL
Little League International has named longtime Williamsport attorney Brian J. Bluth as its new Deputy General Counsel, effective December twenty-ninth. Bluth will assist with legal affairs across the organization, including contracts, compliance, and litigation. Little League leaders say his extensive legal experience and deep local ties make him a strong addition to the South Williamsport-based organization.
HOMELESS ASSISTANCE GRANTS AVAILABLE FROM UNITED WAY
Nonprofit agencies in Lycoming County are being invited to apply for Homeless Assistance Program funding for the coming year. The United Way of North Central Pennsylvania says up to one hundred ninety-five thousand dollars is available to support services such as emergency shelter, rental assistance, bridge housing and case management. Eligible agencies must serve homeless or near-homeless individuals in Lycoming County. Applications are due by four p.m. Tuesday, December 30th, with details available at uwncpa dot org slash HAP.
DONATIONS FOR FINES AT COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES
For the fourth year, Commonwealth University police turned parking tickets into a way to give back through their “Food for Fines” program. Students at the Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield campuses were able to have tickets dismissed by donating canned food throughout November. The effort collected more than twelve-hundred food items, which were donated to campus and community food pantries across all three locations.
