FATAL SNOWMOBILE ACCIDENT IN LIMESTONE TOWNSHIP
A Lycoming County man died Sunday afternoon while snowmobiling with friends in Limestone Township. The county coroner says the 74-year-old Loyalsock Township resident suffered a medical emergency while riding on a forestry road near Vandyke Road. Friends saw him slump over before leaving the trail and striking a tree. According to North Central PA dot com, first responders attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, with officials ruling the death natural causes. The man’s identity has not been released.
MAN CHARGED FOR STEALING, BURYING TRAIL CAMERAS
A Mifflinburg man is accused of stealing and burying trail cameras from state game lands in Union County. Authorities say 46-year-old Timothy Lohr took two cameras from a Limestone Township parking area last October after being caught on the devices. Game wardens tracked him through photos of his truck, then followed him to his yard where the cameras were unearthed. Lohr faces misdemeanor theft charges, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for February tenth.
$7.8 MILLION AWARDED IN HAZING CASE
A Luzerne County jury has awarded $7.8 million to the estate of Justin King, who died after a hazing incident tied to an alcohol-fueled fraternity party in 2019. Jurors found the Bloomsburg chapters of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority responsible, saying King was plied with alcohol before falling down a 75-foot embankment. Bloomsburg University was not named as a defendant in the lawsuit, which cited violations of Pennsylvania’s anti-hazing law.
PASSPORT SERVICES TO END AT WILLIAMSPORT LIBRARY
The James V. Brown Library will stop offering passport services later this month after being deactivated by the U.S. State Department. The change takes effect February 12th and is tied to enforcement rules affecting nonprofit organizations, not the quality of service. Library officials say passport services brought in about ninety-thousand dollars last year, and while applications will end, passport photo services will continue as lawmakers consider a fix.
EQUPMENT STOLEN FROM WOODWARD TOWNSHIP BUILDING
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a burglary at a park clubhouse in Lycoming County that left thousands of dollars in equipment stolen. Troopers say the break-in happened at Harvest Moon Park in Woodward Township sometime between January 20th and 21st. Investigators report power tools and mechanical equipment valued at nearly 7,800 dollars were taken, with no forced entry found. Anyone with information is urged to contact state police in Montoursville.
ANOTHER DELAY IN STABBING CASE TRIAL
Two Sunbury men facing felony assault charges are set to return to court after another delay in their preliminary hearing. According to the Daily Item, Marvin Lamar and Paul Henderson are accused in a December stabbing in the city, but the case has now been continued for a fourth time due to attorney conflicts and a witness being advised to seek legal counsel. A judge says the repeated delays strain the court system, and the next hearing, February 10th, is expected to determine whether the case moves to county court or is dismissed.
ANTI ICE PROTESTERS TARGET FETTERMAN
Protests took place outside Wilkes-Barre as Pennsylvanians rallied outside U.S. Sen. John Fetterman’s local office, calling on him to oppose additional funding for immigration enforcement. Demonstrators, organized by groups including Pennsylvania Stands Up, chanted and attempted to deliver a letter signed by more than 120 organizations last week, but were told the office was closed without appointments. Fetterman said shutting down the government would not cut ICE funding but reiterated his opposition to current enforcement tactics.
