MEMORIAL AVENUE FIRE DISPLACES SEVEN
Seven people are displaced after a fast-moving fire in Williamsport. Crews were called around 10:15 Thursday morning to the 800 block of Memorial Avenue, where a garage was already collapsing and flames were spreading. Officials say the fire damaged nearby homes on Memorial Avenue and spread to properties along Second Street, prompting a second alarm. The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced as crews work to restore power.
DRUG DEALER GETS 25 YEARS IN STATE PRISON
A Williamsport man will spend decades behind bars after a judge handed down a lengthy sentence Wednesday. Thirty-six-year-old Timothy Altwan Easter was ordered to serve up to 25 years in state prison after being convicted of selling fentanyl and cocaine from a home where children were present. Prosecutors say drugs and a loaded gun were found within reach of kids. The judge cited Easter’s lack of remorse and repeated offenses, noting he had multiple arrests while on probation or bail. Easter, who plans to appeal, also faces another upcoming trial on additional drug charges.
PCT CULLINARY STUDENTS HEAD TO KENTUCKY DERBY
Students from Pennsylvania College of Technology will once again be heading to one of the biggest sporting events in the country. Nearly 30 Penn College students and staff will work behind the scenes at the Kentucky Derby on May 2 at Churchill Downs. The group will help prepare food and serve guests during Derby Week, which draws more than 150-thousand people each year. School officials say the hands-on experience gives students a chance to build skills, make connections and work alongside top chefs from across the country.
TEXT NETWORK AVAILABLE IN PA FOR NEW MOTHERS
A Pittsburgh-based nonprofit is expanding support for moms across Pennsylvania. NurturePA announced its free mom-to-mom texting service is now available statewide, connecting mothers with trained volunteers for advice and encouragement. The group is also launching its “Wisdom on a Mother Level” campaign ahead of Mother’s Day, inviting people to share parenting tips and experiences. INMATE DEATH RULED A SUICIDE
A prison death in Centre County is being ruled a suicide. State police say 40-year-old Keith Levan was found unresponsive in his cell at SCI Benner on April 11. Staff attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead that evening. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and confirmed Levan was alone at the time, with no signs of foul play. He had been serving a four to ten year sentence for failing to update his sex offender registration. Officials say the investigation is now complete.
TRAFFIC STOP BRINGS ABOUT TWO ARRESTS
Two people from Shamokin are facing charges following a traffic stop in Lewisburg. Ryan Watkins , is charged with DUI, illegal firearm possession and drug-related offenses. Police say a handgun was also found in his vehicle without a permit. Passenger Hannah Schaeffer, is charged with criminal trespass. Both are accused of returning to a towing business after being warned to stay away. A preliminary hearing is set for May 7.
STATE BUDGET GETTING STARTED EARLY
Pennsylvania’s state budget process is getting an earlier start than usual this year. The House has already passed a spending plan more than two months ahead of the June 30 deadline. The proposal mirrors Governor Josh Shapiro’s 53-billion-dollar budget and now heads to the Republican-controlled Senate. Lawmakers approved the bill in a 107 to 94 vote, though leaders say much work remains. The plan includes a six percent spending increase and projects a multi-billion-dollar deficit, setting the stage for negotiations in the weeks ahead.
ST JOHN NEUMANN GOING TO A FOUR DAY WEEK
A city school is trying a new approach to learning. St. John Neumann Regional Academy in Williamsport announced a two-year pilot program switching to a four-day school week starting next term. According to the Sun Gazette, students will have longer school days Monday through Thursday, while Fridays will focus on tutoring, internships, field trips and career exploration. School leaders say the change is designed to improve student well-being, family time and real-world learning opportunities, while still meeting all state academic requirements.
