Residents in Williamsport will have a chance to learn more about home rule at an upcoming public event. Candidates for the proposed Home Rule Study Commission are hosting a meet-and-greet May 9 at the James V. Brown Library. A new report from the Center for Rural Pennsylvania shows overall crime is down across Pennsylvania. The study found crime dropped about 21 percent between 2013 and 2023. However, researchers say rural areas are seeing higher rates of violent crime, DUIs and drug offenses compared to urban counties outside of Philadelphia. Local officials say while violent crime has declined in some communities, minor crimes and retail theft remain concerns. The report aims to help leaders better understand trends and guide public safety decisions.
